Catch Plenty of Zzzzs: Tips to Sleep Like a Baby
For more information on saying goodbye to insomnia and how you can sleep like a baby, please click HERE.
There is nothing more restorative for the body than getting ample sleep night after night after night (or day after day if you work at night and sleep in the daytime). A good night's sleep is one of the most important parts of a wellness lifestyle and an essential component of being vibrantly healthy. Sleep is when we reset our appetite control and pain control. Sleep is when our energy regroups for the day to come. Below you will learn about some of my favorite tips for daily, restorative sleep, including my favorite mattress, hydrating water, heat therapy, the best superfood, and more.
The costs of sleep deprivation are irritability, falling asleep at work, wavering attention, and not fully processing the outside world. Tension, physical or psychological, keeps us from relaxing sufficiently to fall asleep. People are literally taking their worries to bed. Learn techniques for coping with stress and "winding down" before bed. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, stretching, and meditation are very helpful. Regular exercise is also a terrific way to help you sleep better. But don't exercise right before you are about to go to bed.
Lack of sleep undermines your body's ability to deal with stress. Research suggests that even one or two nights of sufficient sleep (experts recommend eight hours) can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol more than a number of other stress management techniques combined. Granted, stress often interferes with sleep, but do your best to increase your chances of getting quality sleep by avoiding caffeine after noon, establishing a regular bedtime and wake-up time, and doing something relaxing in the hour before bedtime (no electronic devices!).
Here's a tip to remember: Don't associate the bed with wakefulness. If you can't sleep, get up and read a book, knit, watch television, or write in a journal until you feel sleepy. Avoid sleeping pills and alcohol. On the link above, I write about some of my favorite natural, effective, herbal remedies to help with getting deep sleep.
Need to Lose Weight?
Sleep plays a major role in glucose metabolism and neuroendocrine function. Research shows that getting a good night’s sleep is a critical part of losing weight. In a 16-year study involving 70,000 women, researchers found that women who slept five hours per night were 32% more likely to experience major weight gain (an increase of 33 pounds or more) and 15% more likely to become obese, compared to those who slept seven hours a night.
“Sleeping less may affect changes in a person’s basal metabolic rate (the number of calories you burn when you rest),” says lead researcher Sanjay Patel, MD., of Case Western Reserve University.
In Hong Kong, researchers found that children who did not get sufficient hours of sleep were more likely than their well-rested peers to be overweight.
It’s possible that reduced sleep means adults and kids are tired and therefore less likely to exercise. There is also some evidence that lack of sleep produces changes in levels of satiety and the hunger hormones leptin and ghrelin, according to Brown University Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Mary A. Carskadon.
Too little sleep also makes you hungry, especially for calorie-dense foods, and primes your body to hold on to the calories you eat. It also boosts your insulin levels, which increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
So if losing weight is one of your goals, make sure that you make getting enough sleep a nonnegotiable daily practice in your life. And here are some more surefire tips to help you sleep like a baby.
The Best Water for You, Your Family and Beloved PETS… and for Easy Weight Loss & Renewed Vitality
It’s time to spring-clean and rejuvenate your body from head to toe, inside out. What’s the best way to do this? WATER, WATER, WATER. The most essential element in nutrition is water. Depending on the source, water almost always contains valuable minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The Ionizer Plus® Water Electrolyzer, which I've used for over 20 years, concentrates the minerals present in your water. In the process of doing so, it makes both the water and the minerals more bioavailable and easily absorbed. Drinking this delicious water has the effect of improving the digestive system and, in fact, the High Tech Health company guarantees that it will help solve digestive problems within 30 days, or your money back.

This advanced ionizer/water purifier filters the tap water and removes all impurities, including arsenic and other chemicals. Then the water is treated with ultraviolet for disinfection. Next, it enters an electrolysis chamber where it is treated with a precise direct current that divides it into two distinctly different types of water, alkali-ion and acidic-ion. The resulting alkaline water permeates the body quickly and efficiently. I would not be without my Ionizer Plus. I use the alkaline water for drinking and in my food recipes, and I use the acid water for all of my plants and for special topical skin rejuvenators such as frozen ice cubes to rub on my face and neck after showering (a surefire natural beauty secret that will give your skin a youthful glow every time; I do this 3-4 times weekly to keep my skin radiant).
When your body becomes too acidic from diet, stress, and an unhealthy lifestyle, it is more difficult to lose the extra fat. In my private practice, when clients come to see me for help in losing weight, I always recommend getting the Ionizer Plus and drinking 10 glasses of water from this device every day. People are always astonished at how their extra weight falls away more easily simply by doing this one thing — drinking this purified, alkaline water each day. Why does this happen? Well, ...

1. Start the day in a healthy and positive way: Just as the first day of a new 30-day health and get-fit plan sets the tone for the entire month-long program, the first 40 minutes of each day sets the tone for the entire day. How do you want these first minutes to be in the morning? I want them to be relaxed, happy, healthy, positive, and sanguine. To make this happen, do what you can the night before so your first moments upon arising can be as positive as possible. Lay out your exercise clothes or your work clothes so you don't need to think about what to wear in the morning. Perhaps you can pack the lunches for yourself and your kids the night before. Or how about this? Set the kitchen table for breakfast the evening before so it's ready to greet you in the morning. When you begin the day in this most positive way, your entire day will flow more smoothly and confidently. During the holidays, there's so much added stress in our lives, so this simple practice of honoring those 40 minutes will make a profound difference in your life. Start tomorrow morning and continue this simple practice thereafter.
2. Take the best, natural multivitamins in the morning and evening: Any time of the year, it's important to start the day with a healthy breakfast and a good multivitamin. This will help you make better food choices throughout the day. Studies show that people who eat a healthy breakfast rarely overeat during the day. For years, I have taken one of my favorite superfoods — an all-natural whole-food supplement available in tablet or powder form. What is this gem of nature? It's called Blue Majik...

Before I go into detail on the benefits of infrared saunas, I thought you'd like to know this is my #1 secret to staying healthy and forever youthful, along with drinking the right kind of alkaline water. For decades, I have been using a personal Thermal Life Far Infrared Sauna (and now the Transcend, too) on a regular basis and know it's one of the main reasons that I haven't been sick (not even a cold or the flu) in almost 30 years and have never taken any prescription medication. I have also seen remarkable benefits in people using this sauna, including help with weight loss; reduction of cellulite; stress relief; toxin removal; cardiovascular support; reduction in achy joints and muscles; enhanced immune health; skin rejuvenation and so much more.
Thermal life saunas come in all sizes whether it's for just one person or an entire family. Personally, I got the largest one so I could lie down in it easily like you see the lady doing in the photo above. Sometimes I sit up when taking a sauna, but I usually start the sauna practice with lying down in some fashion. I often listen to music or motivational audio programs, and sometimes I even take a nap.
Saunas, in one form or another, have been used across ages and oceans. Cultures around the world have recognized the relaxing benefits of rendered heat within a warm, welcoming space. From the Romans to the Japanese to the Scandinavians, heat therapy has been essential for the body to unwind from the stresses and hardships of daily life.
Far infrared is a section of the natural band of light that is not visible to the human eye, but can be felt as heat. Unlike the high heat produced in traditional saunas, far infrared heat is able to [enetrate the body to a depth of 1.5 to 2 inches. This stimulates they body's cellular detoxification process more effectively and at lower temperatures than a traditional sauna.
Heat therapy — sweating — is not only an important part of our physical well-being, but in these modern times of water and air-borne pollution, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and poor dietary and exercise habits, the therapeutic internal cleansing of regular sweating is critical to maintain a healthy body and mind.
Infrared Sauna vs Steam Room
The infrared sauna is more beneficial over the steam room if weight loss is desired because of the energy expenditure. Compared to the steam room, the sauna places a greater demand on the body in terms of using up calories — therefore assists in fat loss. The heart has to work harder to send more blood to the capillaries under the skin. There energy required for that process is derived from the conversion of fat and carbohydrates to calories. In addition, the sweat glands must work to produce sweat, which also requires energy and more calories. Studies show that a person can burn up to 300 calories during a sauna session, the equivalent of a 2-3 miles jog or an hour of moderate weight training.
On the program This Week in America with host Ric Bratton, I share my 12 top-notch health- and life-changing recommendations on The ABCs of Easy & Lasting Weight Loss & Youthful Vitality.
Having a personal Thermal Life Infrared Sauna at home (they come in all sizes to fit small or large spaces) is a surefire way to heal the body and create vibrant health. You can use it any time that's convenient for you, and you won't need to sit in the toxic residue from other people in a community sauna such in a gym. When I take a sauna, I relax in the comfort of this healing space and drink alkaline water (to help further the detoxification of my body) from my Ionizer Plus Alkaline Water System. It's truly rejuvenation in a glass of water — the reason I drink at least 8 glasses of this water daily and use it for my cooking and recipes.

Let Kindness Be Your Default Position & Guiding Light
To listen to one of my interviews about KINDNESS entitled "Sleep, Pray, Eat, Walk, Repeat," please click HERE.
To read five personal stories on kindness, please click HERE.
Gandhi said... the pure loving kindness of one gentle soul could nullify the hatred of millions. It's time for all of us to be more tenderhearted and to show kindness to everyone.
Are people really getting meaner or is it just your imagination? From the halls of Congress to the main streets of small-town America and big cities everywhere, it seems like no one is capable of civilly listening to others whose viewpoints are different.
As I write about in my books HEALTHY, HAPPY & RADIANT...AT ANY AGE, THE JOY FACTOR: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health and WALKING ON AIR: Your 30-Day Inside and Out Rejuvenation Makeover, I believe that we are in the midst of an epidemic in which few people have the time to be kind. This rampant form of business is nothing short of a sickness—a form of self-centeredness brought about by people rushing around trying to make ends meet and cope with mounting stress and numerous health issues.
Do you feel overwhelmed in your life and less compassionate than you did years ago? As I counsel people around the country, and even worldwide, it's been my experience that most people are burning the candle at both ends — daily; most people are experiencing severe sleep debt; most people have no time to call their own; and most folks are living in what I refer to as a spin-cycle lifestyle. Can you relate to any of this?
World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion.
~ Dalai Lama
The more you rush around without keeping your life in perspective and in balance, the more you lose compassion for others and yourself, too. People are in such a rush these days, living on the fast track — talking fast, eating fast, and moving fast. What a difference from 50 years ago. Did you know that you'll probably do more in this year — with appointments, people to meet, and places to go — than your grandparents did their entire lives? Given our current pace, we barely have time to relax and cultivate relationships with our spouses and children, friends and nature, much less with God. Is it any wonder that stress-related diseases are on the rise? We are under pressure to keep busy even in our leisure hours. Computers have sped up our lives. We want to do everything, and we want to do it all at once. We talk on the telephone and text while we drive (even though there are now laws against this), watch television while we read, and conduct business while we listen to the radio. I see this as a sickness of epidemic proportions — a "busyness" or "hurry" sickness. This type of lifestyle also drains our hearts of compassion, according to many studies of late. If you understand the speed of life, you can slow it down by enjoying it more and by making a conscious choice of being more compassionate. Start with yourself. You'll find tips in one of my recent radio interviews about living with balance and confidence and achieving goals (click HERE) and also below.
William Penn described well the importance of not putting off acts of kindness when he wrote, If there is any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not deter or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again. What's more, the Dalia Lama avowed: “World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion.”

INTERVIEW WITH SSJ
Susan Smith Jones, PhD, hasn’t been sick in over 30 years. She doesn’t receive flu shots or take medications. Some people may call it clean living, others may credit luck, but Jones attributes her phenomenal health to the wisdom passed down from her grandmother who taught her to rely on nature’s nourishment—food, spices, herbs and healthy lifestyle choices— for total wellness.
Jones has made it her life’s mission to spread this wisdom, first as a teacher for more than 30 years at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and by establishing herself as a foremost expert on diet, nutrition and natural remedies, writing more than 2,000 magazine articles on health and 27 books, including Walking on Air, Healthy, Happy & Radiant...at Any Age, Living on the Lighter Side, The Curative Kitchen & Lifestyle, The Joy Factor, and for children, Vegetable Soup/The Fruit Bowl.
When it comes to creating vibrant health season after season, Jones said we should look to the “super foods” and other lifestyle choices for healing the body, boosting immunity, and feeling energetic and youthful... at any age. Each day when you wake up, she says, can be a new beginning, a fresh start where you commit to the healthiest lifestyle possible. She reminds us that we are the President and CEO of our body and our life and we need to make our health a top priority day in, day out.
Here are her top tips for staying well — mentally, physically and spiritually — this season and beyond.
Chia Seeds — A SuperFood Grain Worth Consuming
Rediscover the amazing Chia seed — a super nutritious food of the ancient Aztec and Mayan cultures. Experience long lasting energy, bowel regularity, and more! The tiny seed packs a big nutritional punch with protein, fiber, and more omega-3s than flaxseed.
I bet you've heard the saying — "What's old is new again." This can clearly be said when referring to the chia seed. I've been eating chia seeds since I was a teenager and I learned about them from my grandmother. The chia seed is the ancient grain with all the modern benefits and backed by science. Holistic nutritionists and conscious consumers are excited about the remarkably nutritious and very "in" chia seeds. Why? It's an amazing source of calcium for bones; soluble fiber, so important for colon and blood sugar health; beneficial fats for energy; plus a natural ratio of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acids (ALA) and omega-6 essential fatty acids.
You can incorporate this legendary grain into your daily diet in a variety of ways. I prefer the premium whole or powdered Black Chia seeds available through the Penn Herb Company. I add both of these to yogurts, salads, cereals, protein drinks, smoothies, baking recipes, or just eat them by the spoonful. You can also sprout chia seeds as you've probably seen on TV commercials if you live in the United States.
And if, for some reason, you don't like the taste or feel of the seeds, you can also get them in capsule form. Click HERE for more information. Read further to find out another bonus for anyone desiring to lose weight.

The pH levels of the body's internal fluids affect every single cell in the body. Increases or decreases in pH denature enzymes, harm important metabolic processes and can result in serious health consequences. This, in turn, affects the tissues, organs, and even the nervous system and signals from the brain.
Using Your URINE pH as a Reflection of Your Level of Health
The normal range of pH of urine fluctuates from 4.5 to 8. Urine pH is a good screening test to help predict a variety of disease states within the body. The diet has a huge influence on the pH of the urine and the body's pH throughout the day. Citrus fruits, legumes, and vegetables raise the pH, making the urine more alkaline. Meats and cranberry juice have the opposite effect, making urine more acidic.
A first morning urine pH test is the only pH test worth doing. The body's first morning urine tells you what the kidneys are doing. The kidneys do their work overnight and the urine produced in the morning is usually acidic. To neutralize acidic waste, drinking alkaline water and eating an alkaline diet is imperative. Otherwise, sodium, magnesium, and calcium are depleted and the body begins to steal calcium from the bones to neutralize acidic waste in the kidneys. In severe cases, this will result in osteoporosis.
Secretion of acidic urine by the kidneys is one of the most important mechanisms the body uses to maintain a constant body pH.
A highly acidic urine pH occurs in:
- Uncontrolled Diabetes
In people who are not drinking alkaline water, the pH of urine tends to be acidic. Control of pH is important in the management of several diseases. Consumption of alkaline water will make the urine less acidic. Below highlights the many ways you can benefit from drinking alkaline water.

Energy within the human body is an astonishingly complex and powerful phenomenon. There is probably very little that goes on in your body, your mind, or your life that doesn’t have an impact on how much energy you have. Conversely, how much energy you have affects everything in your life, including your self-confidence, your chances of success, your work, love relationships and friendships. Energy is, indeed, one of your most valuable resources. It is also a resource that you can control.
Here are some of my best tips to supercharge your energy:

The Health Benefits of Pumpkins & Pumpkin Seeds
Scroll below to the yellow box see how to get my series of 7 Natural Remedy Booklet/CD combos FREE.
Just because Halloween only comes around once each year, that’s no reason to forget about pumpkins the rest of the time, as I write about in detail in my book HEALTH BLISS: 50 Revitalizing NatureFoods & Lifestyle Choices to Promote Vibrant Health. Fresh or canned, this colorful fruit (not a vegetable) can help keep you healthy for many months of the year. Like melons, it is a member of the gourd family. They offer lots of beta-carotene (only carrots and sweet potatoes have more) and are the number-one source of alpha-carotene, a cancer inhibitor that’s even more powerful than beta-carotene, according to studies. Researchers looking at the diets of more than 100,000 people found that those people who consumed the most alpha-carotene had as much as a 63 percent lower incidence of lung cancer.
Carotenoids are deep orange-, yellow-, or red-colored, fat-soluble compounds that occur in a variety of plants. Carotenoids protect the plants from sun damage while they help them attract birds and insects for pollination. Carotenoids have been linked to a host of health-promoting and disease-fighting activities. They decrease the risk of various cancers, including those of the lung, colon, bladder, cervical, breast, and skin. In the landmark Nurses’ Health Study, women with the highest concentrations of carotenes in their diets had the lowest risk of breast cancer. Carotenoids also play a major role in protecting the skin and eyes from the damaging effects of ultraviolet light.
Extremely high in fiber and low in calories, pumpkin offers other nutrients, including potassium, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and vitamins C and E. One ounce of pumpkin seeds provides 20 percent of the daily RDA for zinc, an important immune-boosting mineral. And studies show that a compound in pumpkin seeds may help prevent benign prostate enlargement, a common problem for men over 50. For detailed information on how to purchase the best pumpkins for cooking, how to roast the seeds, where to purchase the best raw pumpkin seeds, and more nutritional information for pumpkins and their seeds, please continue reading.
The Benefits of Sprouts, Wheatgrass & Living Foods
If you are into eating a living foods diet, then you probably are well acquainted with sprouts. These remarkable gifts of nature are pure, fresh, nutrient-rich, and alive with their vital force intact. If you’re interested in experiencing healing, optimum health, and vitality, then make sprouts — the food for the future — part of your healthy kitchen and lifestyle. Sprouts have been the cornerstone of my wellness program for over 40 years. Think about it this way: What food can you easily produce and enjoy whether you are three years old or 103, vegan or carnivore, or are living in an inner-city high-rise or on an isolated island? What food is grown indoors with no soil, is harvested in two to seven days, and is loved by children and adults alike? What can supply your family with fresh vegetables year-round, regardless of the season? What food is edible raw or cooked, and is delicious either eaten all by itself or included in an exciting array of recipes? The answer is SPROUTS. To listen to another interview I did on the wonderful world of sprouting, click the playbar below:

In mere hours and at a cost to you of just pennies, its delicate shoot proceeds to provide the most vital food imaginable. Reasons to Grow Sprouts in Your Home
In the last blog, I introduced you to the wonderful world of sprouts. I will continue this blog series on homegrown sprouts and all of their benefits in the hopes that you, too, will catch the passion for growing and consuming more life-giving, nutrient-rich sprouts. Growing and eating sprouts has been one of my greatest passions for decades and I am never without fresh sprouts growing in my kitchen. Besides their nutritional advantage that I wrote about in the previous blog, sprouted seeds, beans, and grains have several other sterling attributes that make them an ideal addition to your regular diet and a prime food source in times of need. Sprouts are economical; ecological; toxin-free; easy to store; low in calories and fat; tasty and versatile; and simple, easy, fast to grow. Below I will write in more detail about all of these categories. I have also devoted an entire chapter (Sprouting Your Way to Vitality) to the wonderful world of sprouts and how to grow them in my full-color recipe and nutrition book Recipes for Health Bliss: Using NatureFoods & Lifestyle Choices to Rejuvenate Your Body & Life. If you are interested in learning more about sprouts, losing weight, looking younger, boosting energy, and preparing healthful, delicious meals the entire family will love, then this celebrated recipe book is perfect for you. It has over 150 color photographs in the book and is beautifully designed — every page — in magnificent color. Louise Hay, world-renowned author and publisher said about this book: "It's the most beautiful health book on the planet."

Sprouts: The Miracle of Germination
When I finished writing my newly released 2-book set on simple ways to experience optimal wellness and to create your best life — Walking on Air: Your 30-Day Inside and Out Rejuvenation Makeover and The Joy Factor: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health, it was indeed a great celebration for me. What began years ago as ideas and visualizations in my mind of what I wanted to do and create germinated into books that people are now enjoying worldwide. Throughout this figurative germination process of bringing these books to fruition, the sprouts I grow in my kitchen also go through a germination process a few times weekly.
If you have read any of the other material that I've written on this website about the health benefits of sprouts and how to grow them in your home, you already know of my passion for these life-giving gems of nature. As mentioned, my grandmother taught me how to grow sprouts and the importance of these nutrient-rich foods when I was a teenager, and they have been part of my health program and kitchen regimen ever since. What feels like years has now really been decades of enjoying the wonderful world of sprouting.
Yes, sprouts are the food for the future, a food you can grow in your kitchen — or almost anywhere in your home or office — for mere pennies and they're packed with a powerful nutritional punch. When you sprout a seed, such as alfalfa or broccoli, it goes through a very special process called germination. During germination, seeds become alive and undergo many fast internal changes. And the great miracle of this amazing process is a huge increase in a host of nutrients, which are miraculously created inside the sprouting embryo. Below are some of the things that take place in the germination process.
Take Loving Care of Yourself: Using Sprouts & Raw Foods to Detoxify, Heal & Rebuild Your Body
In this series of articles on the health benefits of sprouts, live foods, and healthy living, you are learning about why sprouts are my all-time favorite superfood and my passion for educating others about their life-giving attributes. I learned about the nutritional benefits of sprouts from my grandmother as a teenager and have also gathered much information from the premier company for all-things-sprouting — HandyPantry.com. Before I highlight some more benefits of sprouts, let's take quick look at how miraculous is the human body and its ability to heal itself, if given to right food and loving care.
What happens when you cut your finger? It heals itself. It's a miracle to me. Sometimes though — due to our carelessness — it festers, becomes infected, and begins to give us pain. Pain is our body's signal to us that it needs help. With a cut finger, the course of action is obvious. Clean it and disinfect it. But what about tiny, invisible "cuts" that we can't see, which are happening inside our bodies all the time? What do we do about subtle messages of pain coming from them? Too many of us reach for the nearest chemical "pain-reliever," when we could be doing something more — and better. There is a sword stabbing inside our bodies. A sword which is cutting a swath of ill health in millions of Americans and people worldwide.
Our bodies are being damaged inside, invisibly and mercilessly, by toxic chemical reactions. Toxic chemical additives and hazardous wastes in our air, water, and food supplies will continue to pervade our living and working environments. These toxins are returning to us in everything we eat, drink, and breathe. Thankfully, though, much of the internal damage they do heals automatically, like that cut on our finger. However, when our body is not adequately nourished, it can't neutralize and expel these poisons fast enough, as I write about in my booklet/CD combo Detoxify & Rejuvenate: Dr. Susan's Gold-Star Secrets to Beautiful Skin, a Leaner Waistline & Energy to Spare (which you can get as a Bonus Gift when you purchase my new 2-book set Walking on Air and The Joy Factor through the Penn Herb Company numbers at the end of this article). They build up in our body, and so does the invisible damage they do. Toxic build-up can severely damage our immune system. So how do sprouts help heal the body?
How to Grow Sprouts & Wheatgrass
Good sprouting technique doesn't take a "green thumb," just paying attention to four factors: the right amount of moisture, the correct temperature, the free circulation of air, and minimal light. By rinsing them a couple of times daily, you keep them moist. You also wash away carbon dioxide and other metabolic wastes that could cause souring or spoiling. Using cool water when rinsing ventilates and cools the sprouts to prevent overheating. Proper draining prevents excessive moisture that can cause mold and rot. The ideal sprouting temperature depends on the seed, but generally lies between 70° and 85°. To protect the tiny growing things, keep sprouting containers away from cold drafts, direct heat, or any light. For free air circulation, at least one-third of the container must be empty. Sprouts expand 6 to 10 times over a few days, so give them plenty of room to grow. Sprouts are very light sensitive and need to be covered during the early stages of the growing cycle, as you'll learn in the instructional booklet that comes with your organic sprouting seeds and supplies from HandyPantry.com. Here are the six rules of sprouting:
The Healing Benefits of Broccoli Sprouts & Wheatgrass Juice
Previously, I wrote about growing wheatgrass in your home and juicing it. I have grown my own wheatgrass for juicing or have purchased freshly-made wheatgrass juice at juice bars and natural food stores for decades. Sprouted wheat that grows into wheatgrass about 8 inches long is a potent source of concentrated nutrition. As it grows, wheatgrass concentrates chlorophyll and other nutrients in preparation for becoming a big, fruitful plant. Wheatgrass itself is not digestible in our stomachs because it is too full of cellulose and other indigestive fibers. But when juiced and strained, all the nutrients are freed up and are readily assimilable by the body. And wheatgrass juice is a very powerful overall body detoxifier. Its high chlorophyll content cleanses the liver, tissues, and cells and purifies the blood. Placed in the nose, a few drops can reduce inflamed nasal passages and sinuses, relieving congestion without chemicals. Gargling will help relieve a sore throat. Wheatgrass is an excellent natural mouthwash and breath deodorizer. It will leave the breath smelling naturally fresh while nutrifying the gums and delicate tissues of the mouth. Some have used it on the skin to relieve pain and skin problems.
The Handy Pantry Company has a variety of wheatgrass juicers from which to choose, as well as Wheatgrass Kits and organic wheat seeds. Their team of experts can help you make the best choices for you. As I mentioned last time, wheatgrass and other sprout juices are best taken right after juicing for highest nutritional content. You can refrigerate for a day or two if you use an airtight jar. It will keep for a longer period if frozen quickly right after juicing. Wheatgrass juice is a super tonic for the whole body; it's rich in antioxidants, enzymes, simple sugars, chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals. Before I extol the virtues of broccoli sprouts, below is some more information on the healing benefits of wheatgrass juice and how it became popular. Also, you'll enjoy this short YouTube Video of an American 48-state trucker who grows wheatgrass and sprouts in the cab of his truck. If he can grow it on the road while he's working, we can certainly grow the wheatgrass and other sprouts in our kitchens.
Sprouts: A Treasure Trove of Nutrients & Vitality Galore
In his glorious poetry collection entitled Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman wrote: The smallest sprout shows there is really no death. As a food, sprouts are approximately 5,000 years old. In 2939 B.C., the emperor of China wrote about their versatile qualities, and these little gems still remain one of the most nutritious foods on earth. The humble sprout truly is one of nature's most amazing creations. If you'd like to listen to an interview I did on the ABC's of growing and consuming sprouts, visit the homepage playbox on my website or click HERE.
When I was a teenager, my grandmother taught me how to grow sprouts and educated me on their benefits for healing the body and restoring vitality. Consuming and growing sprouts has been dear to my heart for 40 years. If you were to visit my kitchen today as I'm writing this, you would find the following sprouts growing with some ready to harvest and others in the early soaking stages: Red Clover, French Blue Lentils, Red Lentils, Garbanzo, Alfalfa, Radish, Sunflower Seed, and Wheat Grass. For years, I've purchased my organic sprouting seeds (I always get organic seeds for sprouting) through this top-notch company — Handy Pantry. It's a family-run business with a commitment to excellence and a contagious passion for the best sprouting seeds and a variety of sprouting supplies.
If you read any of the previous six blogs about sprouts and growing them, it's already evident to you that I have a passion for sprouts — eating them, growing them, and teaching others of their nutritional value and life-enhancing qualities. Whether you enjoy alfalfa sprouts, lentil sprouts, red clover sprouts, or sunflower seed sprouts, or perhaps you've never tried any sprouts at all and want to learn more about them, here's some information on the nutritional value of a variety of sprouts with some simple suggestions on how you can incorporate them into your diet. In this blog, I'll feature the nutrients found ln the sprouts of Barley, Broccoli, Buckwheat, Chinese Cabbage, Fenugreek, Garbanzo, Green Pea, Lentil, Mung Bean, Radish, Red Clover, Red Winter Wheat, and Sunflower Seed Sprouts. Here's a 2-part radio interview I did on the program Bloom Talk that you might enjoy where I talk about my passion for growing sprouts and using them to help heal the body and mind. Seasonal Allergy Relief

Summer is in full bloom now, if you live north of the equator. For many people, it's a time of renewed vigor, outdoor workouts, and gardening galore. Yet for others — and it's estimated that over 40 million Americans suffer distressing seasonal sensitivities — the blooms spell misery.
The good news? As I write about in detail in my booklet/CD combos Herbs: Nature's Medicine Chest and Conquer Cold & Allergies: Surefire Tips to Find Comfort Naturally & Boost Your Immune System, and also communicate in my latest book WALKING ON AIR: Your 30-Day Inside and Out Rejuvenation Makeover, there's hope in nature's medicine chest for safe, effective, and time-tested relief. And while natural remedies can soothe symptoms after they start, many have found it helpful to build up their defenses before seasonal sensitivities get them down.
Take the "Sting" Out of Seasonal Sensitivities
Stinging Nettle is a popular herbal solution for many in my private practice. Why? For one thing, it's a natural source of quercetin, a plant-derived flavonoid that supports the body's response to allergens and inhibits histamine release (the substance produced in the body that causes bothersome sneezing, itching, and respiratory complaints). To find out more about one of my favorite herbal remedies that takes the "sting" out of seasonal sensitivities, please continue.
Food Dyes -- Why You Should Avoid Them?
Turn on any nightly news report on television or the radio, or open any newspaper these days to the food section, and you will find lots of mounting and eye-opening information on food dyes, food colorings, and other chemicals and why we should avoid them. Some articles highlight the relationship of food dyes to ADHD, hyperactivity, and behavior problems in kids and adults, as well as the correlation between these artificial chemical dyes and cancer.
The use of artificial dyes in foods is up by half since 1990. Food dyes are in more than just candy. They can also be found in bagels, pickles, macaroni and cheese, beverages, fruit rolls, cheese, soft drinks, chips, crackers, gelatins, frozen desserts, breakfast cereals, and so much more. And here's a shocker! . . . they are even used in pet foods! How bizarre is that since some animals, like dogs, see in limited color, but, for some reason, the pet owners would prefer to have their animals' food in more vibrant colors rather than a dull gray dog chow. "Most food colorings are synthetic and are potentially very toxic . . . They are fake substitutes for the natural, fresh colors of foods," as I write about in detail in my two new holistic lifestyle books The Joy Factor: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health and Walking on Air: Your 30-Day Inside and Out Rejuvenation Makeover.

6. Meditate to reduce stress & weight. Sometimes the things that you experience in your life can put a burden on you physically by causing endocrine, or hormonal, events that go on in your body. Medical experts now believe that this is at the root of many degenerative disease processes. In other words, stress has a biological as well as an emotional effect on you and, over time, it can diminish your body’s ability to fortify, protect, regenerate, and heal itself.
Stress can be triggered by emotions, such as anger, fear, worry, grief, or guilt. It can be the result of an injury or trauma, an accident or surgery. Everyday pressures, like family squabbles, impossible bosses, unfaithful spouses, unruly teens, or overdue bills cause stress. An extreme change in sleep patterns, diets, exercise, and even the climate you live in can also create stress. So can chronic illness, pain, allergies, and inflammation. And too much work or too much of anything can create stress. Continue on to learn about how too much stress affects your weight.
