Before I go into detail on the benefits of infrared saunas, I thought you'd like to know this is my #1 secret to staying healthy and forever youthful, along with drinking the right kind of alkaline water. This stimulates they body's cellular detoxification process more effectively and at lower temperatures than a traditional sauna.
Heat therapy — sweating — is not only an important part of our physical well-being, but in these modern times of water and air-borne pollution, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and poor dietary and exercise habits, the therapeutic internal cleansing of regular sweating is critical to maintain a healthy body and mind.
Infrared Sauna vs Steam Room
The infrared sauna is more beneficial over the steam room if weight loss is desired because of the energy expenditure. Compared to the steam room, the sauna places a greater demand on the body in terms of using up calories — therefore assists in fat loss. The heart has to work harder to send more blood to the capillaries under the skin. There energy required for that process is derived from the conversion of fat and carbohydrates to calories. In addition, the sweat glands must work to produce sweat, which also requires energy and more calories. Studies show that a person can burn up to 300 calories during a sauna session, the equivalent of a 2-3 miles jog or an hour of moderate weight training.

The pH levels of the body's internal fluids affect every single cell in the body. Increases or decreases in pH denature enzymes, harm important metabolic processes and can result in serious health consequences. This, in turn, affects the tissues, organs, and even the nervous system and signals from the brain.
Using Your URINE pH as a Reflection of Your Level of Health
The normal range of pH of urine fluctuates from 4.5 to 8. Urine pH is a good screening test to help predict a variety of disease states within the body. The diet has a huge influence on the pH of the urine and the body's pH throughout the day. Citrus fruits, legumes, and vegetables raise the pH, making the urine more alkaline. Meats and cranberry juice have the opposite effect, making urine more acidic.
A first morning urine pH test is the only pH test worth doing. The body's first morning urine tells you what the kidneys are doing. The kidneys do their work overnight and the urine produced in the morning is usually acidic. To neutralize acidic waste, drinking alkaline water and eating an alkaline diet is imperative. Otherwise, sodium, magnesium, and calcium are depleted and the body begins to steal calcium from the bones to neutralize acidic waste in the kidneys. We talk on the telephone and text while we drive (even though there are now laws against this), watch television while we read, and conduct business while we listen to the radio. I see this as a sickness of epidemic proportions — a "busyness" or "hurry" sickness. This type of lifestyle also drains our hearts of compassion, according to many studies of late. If you understand the speed of life, you can slow it down by enjoying it more and by making a conscious choice of being more compassionate. Start with yourself. There is nothing more restorative for the body than getting ample sleep night after night after night (or day after day if you work at night and sleep in the daytime). A good night's sleep is one of the most important parts of a wellness lifestyle and an essential component of being vibrantly healthy. Sleep is when we reset our appetite control and pain control. Sleep is when our energy regroups for the day to come. Below you will learn about some of my favorite tips for daily, restorative sleep, including my favorite mattress, hydrating water, heat therapy, the best superfood, and more.
The costs of sleep deprivation are irritability, falling asleep at work, wavering attention, and not fully processing the outside world. Tension, physical or psychological, keeps us from relaxing sufficiently to fall asleep. People are literally taking their worries to bed. Learn techniques for coping with stress and "winding down" before bed. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, stretching, and meditation are very helpful. Regular exercise is also a terrific way to help you sleep better. But don't exercise right before you are about to go to bed.
Lack of sleep undermines your body's ability to deal with stress. Research suggests that even one or two nights of sufficient sleep (experts recommend eight hours) can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol more than a number of other stress management techniques combined. Granted, stress often interferes with sleep, but do your best to increase your chances of getting quality sleep by avoiding caffeine after noon, establishing a regular bedtime and wake-up time, and doing something relaxing in the hour before bedtime (no electronic devices!).
Here's a tip to remember: Don't associate the bed with wakefulness. If you can't sleep, get up and read a book, knit, watch television, or write in a journal until you feel sleepy. Need to Lose Weight?
Sleep plays a major role in glucose metabolism and neuroendocrine function. Research shows that getting a good night’s sleep is a critical part of losing weight. In a 16-year study involving 70,000 women, researchers found that women who slept five hours per night were 32% more likely to experience major weight gain (an increase of 33 pounds or more) and 15% more likely to become obese, compared to those who slept seven hours a night.
“Sleeping less may affect changes in a person’s basal metabolic rate (the number of calories you burn when you rest),” says lead researcher Sanjay Patel, MD., of Case Western Reserve University.
In Hong Kong, researchers found that children who did not get sufficient hours of sleep were more likely than their well-rested peers to be overweight.
It’s possible that reduced sleep means adults and kids are tired and therefore less likely to exercise. There is also some evidence that lack of sleep produces changes in levels of satiety and the hunger hormones leptin and ghrelin, according to Brown University Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Mary A. Carskadon.
Too little sleep also makes you hungry, especially for calorie-dense foods, and primes your body to hold on to the calories you eat. It also boosts your insulin levels, which increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
So if losing weight is one of your goals, make sure that you make getting enough sleep a nonnegotiable daily practice in your life. And here are some more surefire tips to help you sleep like a baby.

Sprouts: The Miracle of Germination

Yes, sprouts are the food for the future, a food you can grow in your kitchen — or almost anywhere in your home or office — for mere pennies and they're packed with a powerful nutritional punch. When you sprout a seed, such as alfalfa or broccoli, it goes through a very special process called germination. During germination, seeds become alive and undergo many fast internal changes. Take Loving Care of Yourself: Using Sprouts & Raw Foods to Detoxify, Heal & Rebuild Your Body
In this series of articles on the health benefits of sprouts, live foods, and healthy living, you are learning about why sprouts are my all-time favorite superfood and my passion for educating others about their life-giving attributes. I learned about the nutritional benefits of sprouts from my grandmother as a teenager and have also gathered much information from the premier company for all-things-sprouting — HandyPantry.com. Before I highlight some more benefits of sprouts, let's take quick look at how miraculous is the human body and its ability to heal itself, if given to right food and loving care.
What happens when you cut your finger? It heals itself. It's a miracle to me. Sometimes though — due to our carelessness — it festers, becomes infected, and begins to give us pain. Pain is our body's signal to us that it needs help. With a cut finger, the course of action is obvious. Clean it and disinfect it. But what about tiny, invisible "cuts" that we can't see, which are happening inside our bodies all the time? What do we do about subtle messages of pain coming from them? Too many of us reach for the nearest chemical "pain-reliever," when we could be doing something more — and better. There is a sword stabbing inside our bodies. Toxic chemical additives and hazardous wastes in our air, water, and food supplies will continue to pervade our living and working environments. These toxins are returning to us in everything we eat, drink, and breathe. Thankfully, though, much of the internal damage they do heals automatically, like that cut on our finger. They build up in our body, and so does the invisible damage they do. Toxic build-up can severely damage our immune system. So how do sprouts help heal the body?
How to Grow Sprouts & Wheatgrass
Good sprouting technique doesn't take a "green thumb," just paying attention to four factors: the right amount of moisture, the correct temperature, the free circulation of air, and minimal light. By rinsing them a couple of times daily, you keep them moist. You also wash away carbon dioxide and other metabolic wastes that could cause souring or spoiling. Using cool water when rinsing ventilates and cools the sprouts to prevent overheating. Proper draining prevents excessive moisture that can cause mold and rot. The ideal sprouting temperature depends on the seed, but generally lies between 70° and 85°. To protect the tiny growing things, keep sprouting containers away from cold drafts, direct heat, or any light. For free air circulation, at least one-third of the container must be empty. Sprouts expand 6 to 10 times over a few days, so give them plenty of room to grow. Sprouts are very light sensitive and need to be covered during the early stages of the growing cycle, as you'll learn in the instructional booklet that comes with your organic sprouting seeds and supplies from HandyPantry.com. The Healing Benefits of Broccoli Sprouts & Wheatgrass Juice
Previously, I wrote about growing wheatgrass in your home and juicing it. I have grown my own wheatgrass for juicing or have purchased freshly-made wheatgrass juice at juice bars and natural food stores for decades. Sprouted wheat that grows into wheatgrass about 8 inches long is a potent source of concentrated nutrition. As it grows, wheatgrass concentrates chlorophyll and other nutrients in preparation for becoming a big, fruitful plant. Wheatgrass itself is not digestible in our stomachs because it is too full of cellulose and other indigestive fibers. But when juiced and strained, all the nutrients are freed up and are readily assimilable by the body. And wheatgrass juice is a very powerful overall body detoxifier. Its high chlorophyll content cleanses the liver, tissues, and cells and purifies the blood. Placed in the nose, a few drops can reduce inflamed nasal passages and sinuses, relieving congestion without chemicals. Gargling will help relieve a sore throat. Wheatgrass is an excellent natural mouthwash and breath deodorizer. It will leave the breath smelling naturally fresh while nutrifying the gums and delicate tissues of the mouth. Some have used it on the skin to relieve pain and skin problems.
