On the radio program, This Week in America with host Ric Bratton, I cover the meaning of pH balance, how to identify if you have Metabolic Acidosis (most people have this condition and don't even know it), and surefire tips to heal with an alkaline diet. To listen now, click HERE.
Any time of year is the best time to cleanse and rejuvenate your body from head to toe, inside out. What’s the best way to do this? WATER, WATER, WATER. The most essential element in nutrition is water. Depending on the source, water almost always contains valuable minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The Ionizer Plus® Water Electrolyzer, which I've used for over 20 years, concentrates the minerals present in your water. In the process of doing so, it makes both the water and the minerals more bioavailable and easily absorbed. Drinking this delicious water has the effect of improving the digestive system and, in fact, the High Tech Health company guarantees that it will help solve digestive problems within 30 days, or your money back.

This advanced ionizer/water purifier filters the tap water and removes all impurities, including arsenic and other chemicals. Then the water is treated with ultraviolet for disinfection. Next, it enters an electrolysis chamber where it is treated with a precise direct current that divides it into two distinctly different types of water, alkali-ion and acidic-ion. The resulting alkaline water permeates the body quickly and efficiently. I would not be without my Ionizer Plus. I use the alkaline water for drinking and in my food recipes, and I use the acid water for all of my plants and for special topical skin rejuvenators such as frozen ice cubes to rub on my face and neck after showering (a surefire natural beauty secret that will give your skin a youthful glow every time; I do this 3-4 times weekly to keep my skin radiant).
When your body becomes too acidic from diet, stress, and an unhealthy lifestyle, it is more difficult to lose the extra fat. In my private practice, when clients come to see me for help in losing weight, I always recommend getting the Ionizer Plus and drinking 10 glasses of water from this device every day. People are always astonished at how their extra weight falls away more easily simply by doing this one thing — drinking this purified, alkaline water each day. Why does this happen? Well, ...

Before I go into detail on the benefits of infrared saunas, I thought you'd like to know this is my #1 secret to staying healthy and forever youthful, along with drinking the right kind of alkaline water. For decades, I have been using a personal Thermal Life Far Infrared Sauna (and now the Transcend, too) on a regular basis and know it's one of the main reasons that I haven't been sick (not even a cold or the flu) in almost 30 years and have never taken any prescription medication. I have also seen remarkable benefits in people using this sauna, including help with weight loss; reduction of cellulite; stress relief; toxin removal; cardiovascular support; reduction in achy joints and muscles; enhanced immune health; skin rejuvenation and so much more.
Thermal life saunas come in all sizes whether it's for just one person or an entire family. Personally, I got the largest one so I could lie down in it easily like you see the lady doing in the photo above. Sometimes I sit up when taking a sauna, but I usually start the sauna practice with lying down in some fashion. I often listen to music or motivational audio programs, and sometimes I even take a nap.
Saunas, in one form or another, have been used across ages and oceans. Cultures around the world have recognized the relaxing benefits of rendered heat within a warm, welcoming space. From the Romans to the Japanese to the Scandinavians, heat therapy has been essential for the body to unwind from the stresses and hardships of daily life.
Far infrared is a section of the natural band of light that is not visible to the human eye, but can be felt as heat. Unlike the high heat produced in traditional saunas, far infrared heat is able to [enetrate the body to a depth of 1.5 to 2 inches. This stimulates they body's cellular detoxification process more effectively and at lower temperatures than a traditional sauna.
Heat therapy — sweating — is not only an important part of our physical well-being, but in these modern times of water and air-borne pollution, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and poor dietary and exercise habits, the therapeutic internal cleansing of regular sweating is critical to maintain a healthy body and mind.
Infrared Sauna vs Steam Room
The infrared sauna is more beneficial over the steam room if weight loss is desired because of the energy expenditure. Compared to the steam room, the sauna places a greater demand on the body in terms of using up calories — therefore assists in fat loss. The heart has to work harder to send more blood to the capillaries under the skin. There energy required for that process is derived from the conversion of fat and carbohydrates to calories. In addition, the sweat glands must work to produce sweat, which also requires energy and more calories. Studies show that a person can burn up to 300 calories during a sauna session, the equivalent of a 2-3 miles jog or an hour of moderate weight training.
On the national radio show This Week in America with host Ric Bratton, I share my top-notch health- and life-changing recommendations on simple ways to look and feel your very best and How to Detoxify Your Body Quickly & Effectively.
Having a personal Thermal Life Infrared Sauna at home (they come in all sizes to fit small or large spaces) is a surefire way to heal the body and create vibrant health. You can use it any time that's convenient for you, and you won't need to sit in the toxic residue from other people in a community sauna such in a gym. When I take a sauna, I relax in the comfort of this healing space and drink alkaline water (to help further the detoxification of my body) from my Ionizer Plus Alkaline Water System. It's truly rejuvenation in a glass of water — the reason I drink at least 8 glasses of this water daily and use it for my cooking and recipes.

The pH levels of the body's internal fluids affect every single cell in the body. Increases or decreases in pH denature enzymes, harm important metabolic processes and can result in serious health consequences. This, in turn, affects the tissues, organs, and even the nervous system and signals from the brain.
Using Your URINE pH as a Reflection of Your Level of Health
The normal range of pH of urine fluctuates from 4.5 to 8. Urine pH is a good screening test to help predict a variety of disease states within the body. The diet has a huge influence on the pH of the urine and the body's pH throughout the day. Citrus fruits, legumes, and vegetables raise the pH, making the urine more alkaline. Meats and cranberry juice have the opposite effect, making urine more acidic.
A first morning urine pH test is the only pH test worth doing. The body's first morning urine tells you what the kidneys are doing. The kidneys do their work overnight and the urine produced in the morning is usually acidic. To neutralize acidic waste, drinking alkaline water and eating an alkaline diet is imperative. Otherwise, sodium, magnesium, and calcium are depleted and the body begins to steal calcium from the bones to neutralize acidic waste in the kidneys. In severe cases, this will result in osteoporosis.
Secretion of acidic urine by the kidneys is one of the most important mechanisms the body uses to maintain a constant body pH.
A highly acidic urine pH occurs in:
- Uncontrolled Diabetes
In people who are not drinking alkaline water, the pH of urine tends to be acidic. Control of pH is important in the management of several diseases. Consumption of alkaline water will make the urine less acidic. Below highlights the many ways you can benefit from drinking alkaline water.

High-Level Wellness Through Simple DETOX
Scroll down to find a recipe for Orange Blue Majik Cocktail
When you look in the mirror, are you feeling and looking your very best? If not, maybe it's time to take better care of your body and embark on a detox and rejuvenation program. In case you're not aware, there's an epidemic sweeping America (and worldwide) that I refer to as "internal toxic pollution." Many people suffer from chronic disease and loss of health not only as a direct result of unhealthy conditions environmentally, but internally as well—within the human body. We often think of health as the absence of disease. But, is this truly health? Are we healthy one day and then all of a sudden sick the next? There's a plethora of evidence that demonstrates to us that health or sickness is a process that develops over a period of time (often years) and is based at the cellular level.

Our Modern Diets Are To Blame
Is there room for improvement in your diet and lifestyle? It's my belief that our modern diets are to blame for many of our most common ailments. Many people are digging their graves with their knives and forks and are making life and death decisions every time they sit down to a meal or snack. Disease often occurs as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle, which causes the body to become sluggish, congested, acidic, and polluted. Antibiotics, excess sugar, carbonated beverages, chemical food additive and over-the-counter drugs can alter the acid-alkaline balance of the intestinal tract, often killing beneficial bacteria and creating the perfect environment for harmful microbes to grow. Without the "good" or "friendly" bacteria to keep them in check, these "bad" bacteria can eventually overrun our body and severely depress our immune system. Make sure you are taking a good probiotic supplement daily to keep your friendly bacteria flourishing. I take and highly recommend E3Probiotics 50 Billion pictured above.
Mucoid plaque is a slimy gel-like substance that covers the inner lining of the intestines and bowel. Plaque harbors toxins and interferes with nutrient absorption. The colon is known to hold up to 30 or more pounds of old matter and can be packed with undigested foods and disease promoting bacteria.
Additionally, parasites are a toxic menace and can wreak havoc in your body. When faulty digestion keeps food from being properly processed and sent out of the body, undigested food can remain in the body and create fermentation and putrefaction. This can cause parasites and germ life to develop. Parasites thrive in an unhealthy, unclean colon. If the bowel contains partially digested proteins, sugars, or starches, it can harbor an alarming variety of parasites. These parasites can range from microscopic organisms to tapeworms 15 inches long. Not very pleasant, is it?
If you are 30 years or older, I highly recommend taking enzymes daily. My favorite plant-based enzyme product, E3Enzymes Supreme Enhanced with E3AFA, helps to break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the food we eat, allowing nutrients to be extracted, absorbed, and carried through the blood stream to the organs and cells of the body. These are the best enzymes I've ever taken, and now I wouldn't be without them. I even take them with me when I travel. Many friends and clients have also reported to me that they no longer had issues with bloating, gas, halitosis, burping, and indigestion. What I have found personally, and many have also confirmed with me from their personal experiences, is an easier time losing weight and keeping it off once we all started taking E3Enzymes Supreme.
For healthy digestion, I take 2 capsules about 15 minutes before each meal. When I use these enzyme for body cleansing, I take 6 capsules, 3 times per day on an empty stomach either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Store them in a cool, dry place; no refrigeration is necessary. I encourage you to try/test the E3Enzymes Supreme for a 3-month period and see how much better you'll feel. I think you will be amazed at the difference in your digestion, energy, and mood!
Four Channels of Elimination
Blue Majik Cocktail Recipes
To order Blue Majik in powder or capsule form, please click HERE.
This simple recipe will knock your socks off. It takes about two minutes to make; it's delicious; it cleanses and rejuvenates the entire body; and it's so beautiful.
Blue Majik is a rich source of Phycocyanin — a powerful, deeply detoxifying antioxidant, an AquaBotanical, which can quench free radicals and has been shown to be a potent natural COX-2 inhibitor. Phycocyanin is being studied more and more by scientists around the world in recent years. The word “phycocyanin” comes from the Greek word for Algae “phyco” and the Greek word for blue “cyan.” Phycocyanin is an amazing water-soluble blue pigment that gives Spirulina its bluish tint. Phycocyanin is only found in blue-green algae like Spirulina—you can’t get it in other foods.
Having this Blue Majik Cocktail (aka Blue Magic Cocktail) daily will do wonders for your vitality, energy, appearance, and confidence!
Serves: 1 - 2
Prep Time: 1 - 2 minutes
- 1 - 1/2 cup Ionizer Plus Alkaline Water (or other juice like apple, orange, grapefruit, blueberry, cranberry, or coconut water)
- 1/4 tsp. Blue Majik powder (or the contents of about 2 capsules)
- 1 drop pure vanilla extract
- 1 star anise
Put the powder into a glass, add the liquid (chilled or room temperature), and mix well until the powder is dissolved. Pour into cocktail glasses (or other favorite glass) and top with a star anise as pictured. The color is absolutely resplendent so make sure you put this in a see-through glass. Enjoy this salubrious cocktail morning, noon, or night. The star anise is mostly for decoration although it will impart a small flavor note of licorice if you let it sit in the refrigerator for a couple hours or more.
At my local juice shop, I get different fresh blends of juices... apple/rose, apple/lavender, apple/pomegranate, watermelon/mint, and more. All of these blends work well for this cocktail, too. A simple coconut water is delicious for this cocktail. It's always a stunning color and enjoyed by all ages, even children.
This star-shaped seed pod of an evergreen tree is about one inch high with eight segments and a dark brown rust color. It get its distinctive licorice taste, like regular anise, from a chemical compound called anethol. However, the two are not related botanically. The star anise is a member of the Magnolia family. It's one of the spices in Chinese five-spice powder.
In traditional Chinese medicine, this beautiful star anise is prescribed as a digestive aid and to help cure colic in babies. It's available in Asian supermarkets and also in most grocery stores in the spice section. When you get it home, store the star anise in a sealed container in a cool dark place; it will last for several months. Throw it out (or put it in your garden's soil) once the flavor fades. If you use it in your simmered or other dishes, star anise is usually added whole (don't break it up into pieces) and discarded before serving.
The next recipe is scrumptious, too.

Typically, when we think of bacteria, we tend to associate these microorganisms with pathogenic or infectious outcomes. But not all bacteria are created equal! Yes, some strains of bacteria, like E. coli, are bad guys, while other strains like L. acidophilus are actually good guys. The latter are known as probiotics, or beneficial bacteria. Consuming probiotics in our diets can help keep our digestive and immune systems running smoothly.
Historically, live bacteria were commonly eaten in food. There is archeological evidence that mankind has used lacto-fermentation as a way of preserving food dating back 1.5 million years. Scientists believe that the human GI tract evolved to adapt to a more or less daily supply of live lactic acid bacteria. We're designed to consume copious amounts of probiotics!
However, with the advent of food refrigeration, pasteurization, and other processing, the ingestion of microorganisms has decreased. In the United States today, we consume very few fermented food products, such as yogurt and sauerkraut. Sterilization of our food supply has limited our potential to ingest beneficial organisms previously consumed on a daily basis − and this may be part of the reason why so many Americans suffer from chronic gut disturbances.
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is one of the largest contact points between our bodies and the environment. Not only does it serve to physically and chemically break down the foods we consume, it also serves as a barrier to harmful substances which may enter the body through oral consumption. In order to perform these functions properly, the GI tract relies upon a complex ecosystem of bacteria. The composition of this ecosystem, or flora “fingerprint,” is set in childhood and is unique to every individual. Once the flora “fingerprint” is established, those specific types of bacteria are then recognized as normal throughout our lives. The immune system is established in such a way that the body is able to distinguish between these good microorganisms and perilous invaders.

1. Start the day in a healthy and positive way: Just as the first day of a new 30-day health and get-fit plan sets the tone for the entire month-long program, the first 40 minutes of each day sets the tone for the entire day. How do you want these first minutes to be in the morning? I want them to be relaxed, happy, healthy, positive, and sanguine. To make this happen, do what you can the night before so your first moments upon arising can be as positive as possible. Lay out your exercise clothes or your work clothes so you don't need to think about what to wear in the morning. Perhaps you can pack the lunches for yourself and your kids the night before. Or how about this? Set the kitchen table for breakfast the evening before so it's ready to greet you in the morning. When you begin the day in this most positive way, your entire day will flow more smoothly and confidently. During the holidays, there's so much added stress in our lives, so this simple practice of honoring those 40 minutes will make a profound difference in your life. Start tomorrow morning and continue this simple practice thereafter.
2. Take the best, natural multivitamins in the morning and evening: Any time of the year, it's important to start the day with a healthy breakfast and some top quality natural supplements as I mention in the yellow box above. This will help you make better food choices throughout the day. Studies show that people who eat a healthy breakfast rarely overeat during the day. For years, I have taken one of my favorite superfoods — an all-natural whole-food supplement available in tablet or powder form. What is this gem of nature? It's called BLUE MAJIK...

Common Causes of Brain Fog: How to Deal with Brain and Mental Fatigue
As the body ages, one's memory can slowly start to fade and momentary lapses of confused thinking can become more common. This is a natural process, but in some cases, brain fog and fatigue can be accelerated by certain situations or conditions. Understanding the common causes of brain fatigue is essential for maintaining good health practices that will keep the brain clear-thinking and healthy for as long as possible.
What Is Brain Fog?
Brain fog, also commonly known as brain fatigue, can be a mild to severe episode of mental confusion that can strike without warning. When this occurs, it is common to experience a lack of focus, poor memory recall, and reduced mental acuity. If the underlying causes of the brain fog are not addressed, then the condition can continue to occur to the point that it can negatively affect one's professional and personal life. It can happen at any age, from childhood into the golden years.
Common Causes of Brain Fog
Brain fog (also known as mental fog or clouding of consciousness) and fatigue can be caused by a range of factors. In all cases, getting to the heart of what causes the brain fog is the key to overcoming this debilitating condition. Common causes of brain fatigue include:
- Toxic Body: Brain fog is one of the first indicators of a toxic body. Year-round, keep your body detoxified (on the alkaline side instead of being more acidic) by supporting the organs of elimination, including the skin, lungs, kidneys, and bowel. For thorough, effective, whole-body detoxification, the most valuable program is to combine the Liposomal Detox Cocktail, Thermal Life Infrared Sauna, and Ionizer Plus Alkaline Water. As a teenager, I learned from my grandmother the importance to keeping my body detoxified and cleansed all year. CLICK HERE to learn about this efficacious Whole-Body Detox program. In my TRIO BOOK SET, I cover in detail all aspects of detoxifying the body and mind so you can experience a life of vitality, clear thinking, high energy, freedom from depression, and joie de vivre.
- Lack of Sleep: The brain needs sleep in order to recuperate. So, when sleep is regularly interrupted, or when one suffers from a sleep disorder, he or she is more likely to experience brain fog in the morning upon waking. For some, a simple cup of coffee is enough to clear away the fog (freshly-made alkaline water works for me in any recipe requiring water), but for those who suffer from serious sleep deprivation, the fog can stay for quite some time.
- Neurological Disorders: Certain neurological disorders have brain fog as side effects of the condition. These include fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple sclerosis.
- Stress: Stress is very powerful and it can negatively affect the body in a number of ways, including causing brain fatigue. While this is common during times of severe stress, such as when a loved one passes or a relationship breaks up, normal everyday stress should not cause it. If one starts experiencing brain fog from normal everyday stress, this may be an underlying sign of another problem.
- Menopause: When women go through menopause, they sometimes experience brain fog due to fluctuating hormones. As the hormones become regulated, the symptoms of brain fog tend to disappear.
- Diabetes: Since glucose is the primary source of energy for the brain, fluctuating glucose levels in the blood can cause some short-term brain fatigue symptoms. For this reason, those with diabetes are at high risk for brain fog.
- Nutritional Deficiencies: Strong brain function relies on proper levels of magnesium, vitamin B12, and amino acids in the body. When these nutrients are deficient or the body is dehydrated, brain fog can occur.
- Side Effects of Medications: Certain medications, such as those for high blood pressure, pain management and allergy relief, can cause mental confusion as a side effect. This can occur with any type of medication, both prescribed and over-the-counter.
Catch Plenty of Zzzzs: Tips to Sleep Like a Baby
For more information on saying goodbye to insomnia and how you can sleep like a baby, please click HERE.
There is nothing more restorative for the body than getting ample sleep night after night after night (or day after day if you work at night and sleep in the daytime). A good night's sleep is one of the most important parts of a wellness lifestyle and an essential component of being vibrantly healthy. Sleep is when we reset our appetite control and pain control. Sleep is when our energy regroups for the day to come. Below you will learn about some of my favorite tips for daily, restorative sleep, including my favorite mattress, hydrating water, heat therapy, the best superfood, and more.
The costs of sleep deprivation are irritability, falling asleep at work, wavering attention, and not fully processing the outside world. Tension, physical or psychological, keeps us from relaxing sufficiently to fall asleep. People are literally taking their worries to bed. Learn techniques for coping with stress and "winding down" before bed. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, stretching, and meditation are very helpful. Regular exercise is also a terrific way to help you sleep better. But don't exercise right before you are about to go to bed.
Lack of sleep undermines your body's ability to deal with stress. Research suggests that even one or two nights of sufficient sleep (experts recommend eight hours) can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol more than a number of other stress management techniques combined. Granted, stress often interferes with sleep, but do your best to increase your chances of getting quality sleep by avoiding caffeine after noon, establishing a regular bedtime and wake-up time, and doing something relaxing in the hour before bedtime (no electronic devices!).
Here's a tip to remember: Don't associate the bed with wakefulness. If you can't sleep, get up and read a book, knit, watch television, or write in a journal until you feel sleepy. Avoid sleeping pills and alcohol. On the link above, I write about some of my favorite natural, effective, herbal remedies to help with getting deep sleep.
Need to Lose Weight?
Sleep plays a major role in glucose metabolism and neuroendocrine function. Research shows that getting a good night’s sleep is a critical part of losing weight. In a 16-year study involving 70,000 women, researchers found that women who slept five hours per night were 32% more likely to experience major weight gain (an increase of 33 pounds or more) and 15% more likely to become obese, compared to those who slept seven hours a night.
“Sleeping less may affect changes in a person’s basal metabolic rate (the number of calories you burn when you rest),” says lead researcher Sanjay Patel, MD., of Case Western Reserve University.
In Hong Kong, researchers found that children who did not get sufficient hours of sleep were more likely than their well-rested peers to be overweight.
It’s possible that reduced sleep means adults and kids are tired and therefore less likely to exercise. There is also some evidence that lack of sleep produces changes in levels of satiety and the hunger hormones leptin and ghrelin, according to Brown University Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Mary A. Carskadon.
Too little sleep also makes you hungry, especially for calorie-dense foods, and primes your body to hold on to the calories you eat. It also boosts your insulin levels, which increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
So if losing weight is one of your goals, make sure that you make getting enough sleep a nonnegotiable daily practice in your life. And here are some more surefire tips to help you sleep like a baby.

Gandhi said... the pure loving kindness of one gentle soul could nullify the hatred of millions. It's time for all of us to be more tenderhearted and to show kindness to everyone.
Are people really getting meaner or is it just your imagination? From the halls of Congress to the main streets of small-town America and big cities everywhere, it seems like no one is capable of civilly listening to others whose viewpoints are different.
As I write about in my books HEALTHY, HAPPY & RADIANT...AT ANY AGE, THE JOY FACTOR: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health and WALKING ON AIR: Your 30-Day Inside and Out Rejuvenation Makeover, I believe that we are in the midst of an epidemic in which few people have the time to be kind. This rampant form of business is nothing short of a sickness—a form of self-centeredness brought about by people rushing around trying to make ends meet and cope with mounting stress and numerous health issues.
Do you feel overwhelmed in your life and less compassionate than you did years ago? As I counsel people around the country, and even worldwide, it's been my experience that most people are burning the candle at both ends — daily; most people are experiencing severe sleep debt; most people have no time to call their own; and most folks are living in what I refer to as a spin-cycle lifestyle. Can you relate to any of this?
World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion.
~ Dalai Lama
The more you rush around without keeping your life in perspective and in balance, the more you lose compassion for others and yourself, too. People are in such a rush these days, living on the fast track — talking fast, eating fast, and moving fast. What a difference from 50 years ago. Did you know that you'll probably do more in this year — with appointments, people to meet, and places to go — than your grandparents did their entire lives? Given our current pace, we barely have time to relax and cultivate relationships with our spouses and children, friends and nature, much less with God. Is it any wonder that stress-related diseases are on the rise? We are under pressure to keep busy even in our leisure hours. Computers have sped up our lives. We want to do everything, and we want to do it all at once. We talk on the telephone and text while we drive (even though there are now laws against this), watch television while we read, and conduct business while we listen to the radio. I see this as a sickness of epidemic proportions — a "busyness" or "hurry" sickness. This type of lifestyle also drains our hearts of compassion, according to many studies of late. If you understand the speed of life, you can slow it down by enjoying it more and by making a conscious choice of being more compassionate. Start with yourself. You'll find tips in one of my recent radio interviews about living with balance and confidence and achieving goals (click HERE) and also below.
William Penn described well the importance of not putting off acts of kindness when he wrote, If there is any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not deter or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again. What's more, the Dalia Lama avowed: “World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion.”

INTERVIEW WITH SSJ
Susan Smith Jones, PhD, hasn’t been sick in over 30 years. She doesn’t receive flu shots or take medications. Some people may call it clean living, others may credit luck, but Jones attributes her phenomenal health to the wisdom passed down from her grandmother who taught her to rely on nature’s nourishment—food, spices, herbs and healthy lifestyle choices— for total wellness.
Jones has made it her life’s mission to spread this wisdom, first as a teacher for more than 30 years at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and by establishing herself as a foremost expert on diet, nutrition and natural remedies, writing more than 2,000 magazine articles on health and 27 books, including Walking on Air, Healthy, Happy & Radiant...at Any Age, Living on the Lighter Side, The Curative Kitchen & Lifestyle, The Joy Factor, and for children, Vegetable Soup/The Fruit Bowl.
When it comes to creating vibrant health season after season, Jones said we should look to the “super foods” and other lifestyle choices for healing the body, boosting immunity, and feeling energetic and youthful... at any age. Each day when you wake up, she says, can be a new beginning, a fresh start where you commit to the healthiest lifestyle possible. She reminds us that we are the President and CEO of our body and our life and we need to make our health a top priority day in, day out.
Here are her top tips for staying well — mentally, physically and spiritually — this season and beyond.
Chocolate: Nutrition & Health Facts
Whether during the holiday season or any other time of year, chocolate seems to be a ubiquitous favorite of many. I thought you would appreciate learning about its benefits so you can savor every bite guilt-free. You will find more detailed information on dark chocolate health benefits in my book Health Bliss: 50 Revitalizing NatureFoods & Lifestyle Choices to Promote Vibrant Health.
Cocoa, the main ingredient of chocolate, provides an impressive amount of antioxidant flavonoids, which fight heart disease and cancer. In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2001, 23 fortuitous subjects added about four tablespoons of cocoa and about 1/2 ounce of dark chocolate daily to an average American diet. The cocoa and chocolate improved their cholesterol ratios and increased the levels of antioxidants in their blood. The plant chemicals in cocoa are also noteworthy. A recent preliminary study published in Cancer Letter found that they prevented the growth of colon cancer cells. In another study reported in the journal Nature, researchers analyzed blood samples from volunteers after they consumed dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate along with milk. One hour later, the dark chocolate significantly increased antioxidant levels. Milk, however, seems to interfere with antioxidant absorption, rendering milk chocolate powerless against disease. Want some studies to support your chocolate desires? Keep reading.
The Health Benefits of Pumpkins & Pumpkin Seeds

Just because Halloween only comes around once each year, that’s no reason to forget about pumpkins the rest of the time, as I write about in detail in my book HEALTH BLISS: 50 Revitalizing NatureFoods & Lifestyle Choices to Promote Vibrant Health. Fresh or canned, this colorful fruit (not a vegetable) can help keep you healthy for many months of the year. Like melons, it is a member of the gourd family. They offer lots of beta-carotene (only carrots and sweet potatoes have more) and are the number-one source of alpha-carotene, a cancer inhibitor that’s even more powerful than beta-carotene, according to studies. Researchers looking at the diets of more than 100,000 people found that those people who consumed the most alpha-carotene had as much as a 63 percent lower incidence of lung cancer.
Carotenoids are deep orange-, yellow-, or red-colored, fat-soluble compounds that occur in a variety of plants. Carotenoids protect the plants from sun damage while they help them attract birds and insects for pollination. Carotenoids have been linked to a host of health-promoting and disease-fighting activities. They decrease the risk of various cancers, including those of the lung, colon, bladder, cervical, breast, and skin. In the landmark Nurses’ Health Study, women with the highest concentrations of carotenes in their diets had the lowest risk of breast cancer. Carotenoids also play a major role in protecting the skin and eyes from the damaging effects of ultraviolet light.
Extremely high in fiber and low in calories, pumpkin offers other nutrients, including potassium, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and vitamins C and E. One ounce of pumpkin seeds provides 20 percent of the daily RDA for zinc, an important immune-boosting mineral. And studies show that a compound in pumpkin seeds may help prevent benign prostate enlargement, a common problem for men over 50. For detailed information on how to purchase the best pumpkins for cooking, how to roast the seeds, where to purchase the best raw pumpkin seeds, and more nutritional information for pumpkins and their seeds, please continue reading.
Chia Seeds — A SuperFood Grain Worth Consuming
Rediscover the amazing Chia seed — a super nutritious food of the ancient Aztec and Mayan cultures. Experience long lasting energy, bowel regularity, and more! The tiny seed packs a big nutritional punch with protein, fiber, and more omega-3s than flaxseed.
I bet you've heard the saying — "What's old is new again." This can clearly be said when referring to the chia seed. I've been eating chia seeds since I was a teenager and I learned about them from my grandmother. The chia seed is the ancient grain with all the modern benefits and backed by science. Holistic nutritionists and conscious consumers are excited about the remarkably nutritious and very "in" chia seeds. Why? It's an amazing source of calcium for bones; soluble fiber, so important for colon and blood sugar health; beneficial fats for energy; plus a natural ratio of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acids (ALA) and omega-6 essential fatty acids.
You can incorporate this legendary grain into your daily diet in a variety of ways. I prefer the premium whole or powdered Black Chia seeds available through the Penn Herb Company. I add both of these to yogurts, salads, cereals, protein drinks, smoothies, baking recipes, or just eat them by the spoonful. You can also sprout chia seeds as you've probably seen on TV commercials if you live in the United States.
And if, for some reason, you don't like the taste or feel of the seeds, you can also get them in capsule form. Click HERE for more information. Read further to find out another bonus for anyone desiring to lose weight.

Energy within the human body is an astonishingly complex and powerful phenomenon. Energy is, indeed, one of your most valuable resources. It is also a resource that you can control.
Here are some of my best tips to supercharge your energy:
1. Shed extra fat. It's important to reduce extra weight you are carrying around on your body. An excess of unhealthy fat puts stress on your entire body and makes you tired. To read my article on 21 Tips to Melt Away Extra Fat, click HERE.

3. Laughter energizes the body and buoys us up. Whatever is stressing you out, one way to mollify this stress is to make sure your life is filled with laughter. Sprouts: The Miracle of Germination
When I finished writing my newly released 2-book set on simple ways to experience optimal wellness and to create your best life — Walking on Air: Your 30-Day Inside and Out Rejuvenation Makeover and The Joy Factor: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health, it was indeed a great celebration for me. What began years ago as ideas and visualizations in my mind of what I wanted to do and create germinated into books that people are now enjoying worldwide. Throughout this figurative germination process of bringing these books to fruition, the sprouts I grow in my kitchen also go through a germination process a few times weekly.
If you have read any of the other material that I've written on this website about the health benefits of sprouts and how to grow them in your home, you already know of my passion for these life-giving gems of nature. As mentioned, my grandmother taught me how to grow sprouts and the importance of these nutrient-rich foods when I was a teenager, and they have been part of my health program and kitchen regimen ever since. What feels like years has now really been decades of enjoying the wonderful world of sprouting.
Yes, sprouts are the food for the future, a food you can grow in your kitchen — or almost anywhere in your home or office — for mere pennies and they're packed with a powerful nutritional punch. When you sprout a seed, such as alfalfa or broccoli, it goes through a very special process called germination. During germination, seeds become alive and undergo many fast internal changes. And the great miracle of this amazing process is a huge increase in a host of nutrients, which are miraculously created inside the sprouting embryo. Below are some of the things that take place in the germination process.
Take Loving Care of Yourself: Using Sprouts & Raw Foods to Detoxify, Heal & Rebuild Your Body
In this series of articles on the health benefits of sprouts, live foods, and healthy living, you are learning about why sprouts are my all-time favorite superfood and my passion for educating others about their life-giving attributes. I learned about the nutritional benefits of sprouts from my grandmother as a teenager and have also gathered much information from the premier company for all-things-sprouting — HandyPantry.com. Before I highlight some more benefits of sprouts, let's take quick look at how miraculous is the human body and its ability to heal itself, if given to right food and loving care.
What happens when you cut your finger? It heals itself. It's a miracle to me. Sometimes though — due to our carelessness — it festers, becomes infected, and begins to give us pain. Pain is our body's signal to us that it needs help. With a cut finger, the course of action is obvious. Clean it and disinfect it. But what about tiny, invisible "cuts" that we can't see, which are happening inside our bodies all the time? What do we do about subtle messages of pain coming from them? Too many of us reach for the nearest chemical "pain-reliever," when we could be doing something more — and better. There is a sword stabbing inside our bodies. A sword which is cutting a swath of ill health in millions of Americans and people worldwide.
Our bodies are being damaged inside, invisibly and mercilessly, by toxic chemical reactions. Toxic chemical additives and hazardous wastes in our air, water, and food supplies will continue to pervade our living and working environments. These toxins are returning to us in everything we eat, drink, and breathe. Thankfully, though, much of the internal damage they do heals automatically, like that cut on our finger. However, when our body is not adequately nourished, it can't neutralize and expel these poisons fast enough, as I write about in my booklet/CD combo Detoxify & Rejuvenate: Dr. Susan's Gold-Star Secrets to Beautiful Skin, a Leaner Waistline & Energy to Spare (which you can get as a Bonus Gift when you purchase my new 2-book set Walking on Air and The Joy Factor through the Penn Herb Company numbers at the end of this article). They build up in our body, and so does the invisible damage they do. Toxic build-up can severely damage our immune system. So how do sprouts help heal the body?
How to Grow Sprouts & Wheatgrass
Good sprouting technique doesn't take a "green thumb," just paying attention to four factors: the right amount of moisture, the correct temperature, the free circulation of air, and minimal light. By rinsing them a couple of times daily, you keep them moist. You also wash away carbon dioxide and other metabolic wastes that could cause souring or spoiling. Using cool water when rinsing ventilates and cools the sprouts to prevent overheating. Proper draining prevents excessive moisture that can cause mold and rot. The ideal sprouting temperature depends on the seed, but generally lies between 70° and 85°. To protect the tiny growing things, keep sprouting containers away from cold drafts, direct heat, or any light. For free air circulation, at least one-third of the container must be empty. Sprouts expand 6 to 10 times over a few days, so give them plenty of room to grow. Sprouts are very light sensitive and need to be covered during the early stages of the growing cycle, as you'll learn in the instructional booklet that comes with your organic sprouting seeds and supplies from HandyPantry.com. Here are the six rules of sprouting:
