PHYCOCYANIN is being studied more and more by scientists in recent years. The word “phycocyanin” comes from the Greek word for Algae “phyco” and the Greek word for blue “cyan.” Phycocyanin is an amazing water-soluble blue pigment that gives Spirulina its bluish tint. Phycocyanin is only found in blue-green algae like Spirulina—you can’t get it in other foods. Phycocyanin is a powerful water soluble antioxidant. Scientists in Spain shows that an extract of Spirulina containing phycocyanin is a potent free radical scavenger and inhibits microsomal lipid peroxidation. (Pinero et al, 2001). Spirulina has many different types of antioxidants, and the unique nature of phycocyanin makes Spirulina a level above other antioxidant foods or formulas. A great deal of research has been done in Japan on phycocyanin. The Japanese have found the phycocyanin protects the liver and the kidneys during detoxification, as well as activating the immune system. Researchers at the Osaka Medical Center for Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases said: “Spirulina is surmised to potentiate the immune system leading to suppression of cancer development and viral infection.” Their human clinical study showed that a hot water extract of Spirulina rich in phycocyanin increased interferon production and NK cytotoxicity (cancer killing cells) when taken orally. This is such an important and much-needed topic on inflammation. It’s a subject I discuss often on radio and TV talk shows worldwide. For the purposes of this Blog, I will answer some of the most-asked questions that I receive about inflammation, diet, and lifestyle. 1. For those of us who don’t know much about inflammation, would you please give us an overview on this topic so we all have a better understanding?
Most of us never give a second thought to inflammation unless we get a bee sting, experience a physical injury such as stubbing our bare toe on a piece of furniture or injuring our back. As soon as one of these events takes place, we experience an immediate sensation of pain that tells us something is definitely wrong. Redness, heat, and swelling usually follow almost immediately. And this immediate reaction is a result of inflammation.
Unfortunately, the most devastating diseases known to humankind — cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and the list goes on — are almost always preceded by months and years of very subtle, unnoticed inflammation, as reported in the recent article in the Wall Street Journal.
Inflammation is good when an injury is experienced in that often the swelling and pain limit the range of motion, allowing the body to heal. However, when subtle inflammation continues for too long, it becomes destructive and may lead to manifestation of various diseases. Almost all diseases are preceded by and accompanied with inflammation. Throughout this Blog, I will explore what is involved with inflammation, its impact on the body, what we can do to reduce uncontrolled inflammation and its damaging effects on our health and how to preclude falling prey to nutritional flapdoodle. Sleep Like a Baby Elixir Smoothie Recipe
Serves: 1-2
Prep Time: 4 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 cup lemon balm or chamomile tea or a combination of both
- 1/2 ripe large banana, or if it's a small one - use an entire banana
- 8 - 12 fresh or frozen, pitted, cherries
- 1 teaspoon Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica powder
- 1 - 2 teaspoons of chia seeds (sometimes I substitute flaxseeds)
- 1/2 stalk celery
Directions:
In a blender, put all of the ingredients and blend until smooth. If you would prefer it thinner, add some more tea. Sip this delicious and relax-enhancing smooth about 60-90 minutes before bedtime. This is an stupendous, surefire sleep remedy that I recommend often in my private practice and everyone wonders how they ever slept or lived without this recipe.

When life's seemingly endless stressors feel like they're wearing you down, depression and anxiety may be close at hand. Research from the University of Michigan found that 90% of episodes of depression are attributable to stressful life events. One of the contributing factors may be elevated cortisol levels. Individuals suffering from depression exhibit higher than normal levels of cortisol along with lower than normal levels of brain chemicals that signal pleasure in the brain, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Anxiety disorders including panic attacks and obsessive compulsive disorder are also associated with the elevated cortisol levels of the chronic stress response.
Prolonged stress interferes not just with our emotional well-being but also with our cognitive functions like memory. Chances are you've experienced forgetfulness during periods of intensive stress (who hasn't misplaced their keys while rushing to get to an important meeting?), but over time chronic stress can lead to full-blown memory loss. Initially, the stress response may improve brain function as increased blood, oxygen, and glucose are funneled to the brain. However, eventually cortisol reduces brain cells' ability to take up glucose – their only nutrient source – and causes them to shrink. Stanford stress researcher Robert Sapolsky has demonstrated that chronic exposure to stress can actually change brain circuitry and kill brain cells, especially in the hippocampus, a part of the brain responsible for learning and memory. This can ultimately make it difficult for the brain to store new memories or recall old ones.
