It may surprise you to know that March got its name from Mars, the Roman god of war. This is because Mars is red in color and the ancient Romans thought it was made of blood spilled in battles and was related to Mars, their god of war. They considered the month of March to be devoted to Mars.
April comes from the Greek goddess Aphrodite (Latin Aphros), the equivalent of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. It is also said that it comes from the the Latin word aperire, which means to open. It was named this because this was the month when the flowers start to open.
During the months of March/April, I am sending you all my warmest wishes and thoughts to help you create and live your best days ever. At any moment, and often when you least expect it, your life can miraculously change. You must keep walking in the direction of your dreams and never give up. You are special! There is nobody on planet earth that's exactly like you — no one who shares your fingerprints, your thoughts, your dreams, or your vision for your best life. If you knew you couldn't fail, what would your life look like this month? Write down this vision in one page and read it often throughout March/April, especially before you go to sleep. Write it as though you are living your best life now. And as you read it, feel the joy and thanksgiving you would experience if this were your current dream-come-true. This is where it begins. Put simply, you must believe it before you see it. Also, invite love to be your constant companion this month and always.
March/April are two of my favorite months of the year. For those of us north of the equator, it's the time when we say goodbye to winter and welcome the arrival of spring, and enjoy the bloom of colorful flowers. As the weather warms up our bodies and thoughts, it's a time to get serious about our health and a personal rejuvenation program and to begin shedding some of our layers of clothing to show more skin. March/April is also a time of new beginnings and fresh starts with a view to enhancing our health, boosting our prosperity, and upgrading our life.
Affirm daily: “I am loving, lovable, and loved.” As you silently send out thoughts of love to everyone throughout the month, rich blessings come back to you in the forms of joy, peace, vitality, prosperity, and more love to bestow.
Bring nature indoors to your home and office with live plants and bouquets of flowers. Whether you feel it or not, as mentioned below, things of nature -- plants and flowers -- brighten your mood and lift your spirit. Replacing Body Parts
Most of us have heard about the idea that manufacturers intentionally design products poorly so that we consumers are forced to buy replacements, often within just a few years. Planned obsolescence is the economic phrase for this phenomenon, which also includes products being made to fall out of fashion so that we are incentivized to buy new items in order to remain current and, therefore, socially acceptable, pressured to keep up with the proverbial Joneses (pun intended), as it were. As Americans we don’t balk much at this since shopping seems to be our national pastime and a day at the mall purchasing a new toaster, make-up, sweater, refrigerator, or dishware is regarded as exciting, exhilarating even.
But what about when planned obsolescence also seems to apply to our bodies? It sometimes seems that our own great Creator’s prior job was serving on the board of Pottery Barn. As the years advance, for many of us, our joints and eyesight begins to fail, our memories fade, and general deterioration sets in. Luckily, however, modern day medicine, like Home Depot, has also made replacements available. It seems that the day when replacing new body parts becomes just as common as replacing the blender may not be far off.
Some Surprising Statistics About Hip and Knee Replacements
Currently, there are more than seven million Americans living with an artificial knee or hip and this figure is expected to rise as our life spans increase. Most people though, like myself, never anticipate that they will become one of this number. What comes to mind for many when thinking of a person with a hip replacement is a little, old, frail nursing home patient (since someone must be really old to need a new hip) who uses a walker after her surgery to get around (because of course she’d need a walker since an artificial hip couldn’t possibly be as good as a real hip). So it was with great reluctance that I finally acknowledged that the only solution for the hip and leg pain, which I’d been suffering from for years, was a hip replacement.

Stressless Living: Tips for a More Joyful Life
It may seem cliché to "stop and small the roses" more, but research demonstrates time and again that simple pleasures can decrease our stress considerably. Indulge in a relaxing hot bath—Japanese researchers found that among high-stress men and women, hot baths reduced cortisol levels (a hormone produced by the adrenal cortex which goes up in response to stress). Add in some lavender bath oil or salts, too, as this will depend your relaxation.
Go ahead and get away for that long weekend. One study showed that after a three-day, two-night weekend away, subjects had a decrease in cortisol and overall stress markers and a boost in immune system function.
Spend time with your pets— "dog therapy" has proven to reduce cortisol levels. Simply petting a dog or a cat lowers the pulse, blood pressure, and breathing rate.
Listen to your favorite (preferably relaxing) music. Music, especially after a stressful event, has been shown to increase the relaxation response; decrease heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels; and increase immunity.
Finally, don't forget to laugh. Research shows that laughter improves mood after high levels of daily stress and even boosts immunity.

- 4 cups water
- 2 tablespoons roasted dandelion root
- 2 tablespoons roasted chicory root
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1-2 ginger coins (sliced from raw ginger root or you can use ginger powder to taste)
Place water, dandelion root, chicory root, ginger coins or powder, and cinnamon stick in a pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer for about 5 minutes. Pour coffee through a small mesh strainer into cups and serve.
TO REITERATE: This centuries-old detoxifier is in the same class as Milk Thistle. Make Friends With Onions
Though the pungent onion may bring treas to the eyes, when it comes to your health, these should be tears of joy. Since Egyptian times, when they were placed in the tombs of kings, onions have been bestowed with special significance for their ability to spice up bland meals and keep the body in optimal health.
The strong-tasting bulb has health benefits similar to its stinky relative, garlic. It can help keep blood sugar levels in check, a boon for those with diabetes. A partner in cardiovascular health, studies show that onion can lower blood pressure and reduce risk factors for coronary heart disease including platelet aggregation and oxidation of cholesterol.
Onions also play a part in digestive health; their strong antibacterial properties ward off unfriendly microorganisms, while their store of the antioxidant quercetin and organosulfur compounds may lower the risk of colon cancer. The quercetin content may also account for onions' potential to lessen inflammation associated with such conditions as arthritis and asthma.
Add onions or onion powder to souls and stews in the cold and flu season. Sauté them to mellow the strong taste yet punch up everyday staples like vegetable dishes and burgers year-round.

Veggie Chili with Beer
Total Time: 30 minutes; 15 minutes active
Veggie chili is a great dish to share with friends and family. It's hearty and satisfying for everyone, and vegetarians will be grateful for the option. Adding beer elevates a simple chili to a rave-worthy one, great with a hunk of cornbread. The alcohol evaporates out of the recipe, so it's fine for children to enjoy, too
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder
1 medium yellow bell pepper, chopped
1 medium green pepper, chopped
1 large carrot, chopped
1 cup wheat beer, red ale or lager
1 14-1/2 ounce can fire-roasted tomatoes, puree
1 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
In a large pot, heat the olive oil. Sauté the onion for five minutes over medium heat, until soft. Add the chili powder and chipotle and stir until fragrant, then add the peppers, carrot and beer. Raise heat to high and bring to a boil, then cover and reduce to medium-low for 5 minutes. Uncover and add the remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes to combine the flavors and thicken the chili.
Serve with a beautiful green salad, a hunk of cornbread or other whole grain bread and beer (if you imbibe).
185 calories, 3 g. fat, 0 mg. cholesterol, 855 mg. sodium, 32 g. carbohydrate, 9 g. fiber, 7 g. protein
- 1 16-ounce package whole wheat linguine
- 1 1/2 cup part-skim ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup reserved pasta water
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh garlic
- 2 tablespoons lemon zest
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 2/3 cup grated Parmesan
- 1/2 cup chopped chives
- Cook pasta al dente in salted water according to package directions. Reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water, and drain the linguine in a colander, shaking to remove any excess water.
- Mix the ricotta, reserved pasta liquid, garlic, lemon juice, lemon zest, red pepper flakes and salt in a serving bowl. Toss with the warm pasta, top with grated Parmesan and chives. Serve immediately.
4 medium blood oranges
Juice of 1 large lemon
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 clove garlic, smashed
1/4 cup olive oil
1 bunch kale, washed, stems removed
1/2 cup slivered red onions
8 ounces feta cheese, crumbled or cubed (I use dairy-free cheese)
1. For the dressing, zest and juice one of the blood oranges into a small bowl or jar. Taste the juice. If it is very tart, add a tablespoon of lemon juice; if it is very sweet, use two tablespoons blood orange juice and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Add salt, pepper, garlic and olive oil and whisk well or shake to combine. Set aside.
2. Roll the kale leaves up, cut crosswise into thin ribbons and place into a serving bowl. Pour the dressing over the kale and use your hands to toss, then massage for a minute or two to tenderize the leaves.
This salad is a great make-ahead, since, unlike many tossed salads, it keeps for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Substitute navel oranges for the blood oranges if you prefer; just be sure to use 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with the sweeter navel orange juice in the dressing.

Inspirational Quotes to Feed Your Soul & Empower Your Dreams
It’s no secret that I like quotes. You'll find them all over my website. My mom used to always say this to me, which I've had on a card attached to my refrigerator for decades...

I am one of those people who get deeply motivated by the right words. Some of the best, encouraging quotes are in the Bible, of course, and one of my favorites can be found in Romans 2:2. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Some of Susan's Favorite Nutritional Supplements & Healthy Living Practices
During my radio and TV interview shows, as well as in my workshops, lectures, and retreats, the most-asked question I get, no matter where I travel in the world, goes something like this: "Susan, what supplements do you take daily or during the week, and what lifestyle practices are most important to you?"
A couple times monthly, I get a therapeutic massage, often a shiatsu-type massage, to help work out my knots and painful trigger points resulting from my active lifestyle, and sometimes I opt for an aromatheraphy or deep tissue sports massage or a Swedish-type massage.
So in addition to regular massage therapy, here are some of my favorite nutritional products and other devices I use and highly recommend with links to the products so you can get more information and order. Most of my clients also use these products and practices.

More Sleep & More Energy: Energize Your Body & Life
Being energized starts with having adequate, quality sleep. Try to minimize your pre-bedtime eating and limit yourself to a small, healthful snack about an hour before bed if you are hungry and going to eat late at night. Otherwise, strive to finish dinner two to three hours before bedtime and keep it on the lighter side to prevent food from interfering with your digestion and sleep. If you find yourself in a slump during the day, first take a look at your sleep and make some improvements in that area, then focus on eating to control your blood sugar levels during the day to optimize your energy. Here are some suggestions for bolstering energy.
1. Water — Water is necessary for proper hydration, and it should be everyone's main beverage. Fatigue is one of the first indicators of dehydration, so drink plenty of water throughout the day to help sustain energy levels. To learn about my favorite rejuvenating and cleansing water, click HERE.
2. Chia Seeds — These tiny gems-of-nature may help control blood sugar and, in turn, sustain energy levels. According to food lore, Aztec warriors survived and thrived by eating just two tablespoons of chia seeds a day. I recommend just two to three teaspoons daily. Stir the seeds in your smoothies and other beverages as seen in this photo.
3. Chamomile Tea — Chamomile tea is relaxing and has mild sedative properties that can help you fall asleep more easily. I always enjoy a strong cup of this aromatic tea about an hour before bedtime. Sweet dreams!
4. Kiwi — In a recent study, people with sleep disturbances who consumed two kiwis about an hour before bedtime fell asleep 35% faster, slept a few minutes longer, and slept more soundly. Kiwi and other foods rich in vitamin C, such as broccoli, strawberries, cantaloupe, and oranges, also support our bodies' energy production.
5. Lentils — Beans and lentils are rich in iron, which can help combat fatigue and weakness due to low iron in the diet. Have a cup of lentil soup with lunch or add kidney and garbanzo beans to your salad. Lentils and beans also contain lots of fiber, which makes them excellent foods for controlling blood sugar and sustaining energy.
6. Kale — Leafy greens like kale, Swiss chard, arugula, broccoli, and spinach contain magnesium. Having adequate magnesium in your diet can reduce feelings of fatigue and also improve the quality your sleep. Beans are also a good source of magnesium.

Before I go into detail on the benefits of infrared saunas, I thought you'd like to know this is my #1 secret to staying healthy, along with drinking the right kind of alkaline water. Apple Nut Butter Granola Sandwich Recipe
Here's an easy, delicious snack that everyone loves and is a breeze to make. Take an organic apple and core it, keeping the skin on, and then slice it as you see in the photo. On one slice, spread some of your favorite nut butter. I often use almond, peanut, hazelnut, and cashew butters.
Sometimes, for more variety, I spread on sunflower seed, pumpkin seed, or sesame seed (tahini) butters. Each one gives this treat a different flavor note. Kids seems to love the almond, cashew, and peanut butters the best. On top of the nut butter, I often add a few raisins, currants, dried cherries, or goji berries and even some granola, if I have some on hand. Top this with another slice of apple and you have a speedy, nutritious snack that you can make in a couple minutes.
The sky's the limit with what you can add to this treat. It's a perfect combination of protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates, and low in calories, too. It will satisfy you, but not make you feel stuffed. Eating two of these apple sandwiches is a "just right" snack for me. Try it!
