Two Chapter Excerpts from Wired for High-Level Wellness

Excerpt #1 from Chapter 9:

Opening Up to Abundance & Blessings

The following is one of the 12 tips I offer in this chapter on how to how to raise your thought processes to a higher level of consciousness so that wealth flows to you and not away from you.

Tip #10: Respect your money — paper, coins and credit cards. Don't simply throw your money into your wallet, purse or other receptacle. Money needs to be respected. Always keep it aligned without creased corners, wadded up or messy. I even take this a step further. In my wallet, my paper bills are all lined up and put in descending order and all facing the same direction. For example, my wallet might have two 50-dollar bills, followed by three 20-dollar bills, followed by two 10-dollar bills, followed by three 5-dollar bills, and, lastly, nine 1-dollar bills. Keep your credit cards in alignment, too, and have as your goal to pay them off in full monthly, or at least every 90 days. If my money gets too old, I make a visit to the bank to trade it in for new money. If you respect your money in this simple, yet practicable way, it will return the favor by multiplying and growing for you.

Here’s a quick example of how this played out for one of my friends. Sarah called me up and asked if she could take me to lunch in Brentwood (Los Angeles) near where I live because she needed some of my prosperity guidance. A year earlier, she had taken my workshop Choose to Be Prosperous. I hadn’t seen her in about five months. Over lunch, she told me that a month prior, they phased out her job at her company so she was out of work. And after sending out multiple resumes to different companies, she hadn’t gotten so much as a nibble of interest from anyone. She was at a loss for what to do next. When our lunch bill arrived, she took out her wallet, opened it up and wrinkled paper money was falling out all over the table. The bills were creased, ripped, folded and a total mess. I reminded Sarah that in my workshop a year prior, I taught everyone the importance of treating our money with respect and then it would grow for us, and even showed them my tips on organizing one’s wallet. She admitted that this key point was the one thing she hadn’t done yet. So I said that there’s no better time than the present, and together we organized all of the money in her tattered wallet.

Next, I excused myself, saying I was going to use the restroom and, instead, went next door to a lovely gift shop and purchased a beautiful new wallet for Sarah to hold all of her unwrinkled and organized money. Before I gave it to her, I reached into my wallet and pulled out a new $50.00 bill and slipped it into her wallet. When I gave her the present, she was overjoyed and so grateful. She loved the wallet in her favorite teal color (and even said she admired it before I arrived for lunch in the gift shop window and wished she could buy it) and even told me that this gift shop was her favorite store in Brentwood. In fact, three years earlier, I learned that she had applied for a job to be manager at the store but someone else got the position. We talked for about two more hours while sipping tea and I shared with her again some of the prosperity and health suggestions I’ve included in this chapter and book.

Well, that’s not the end of the story. After I treated Sarah to lunch, we went together to the gift shop and looked around. While she was trying on scarves, I was near the front counter and overheard the store’s manager on the telephone telling someone that she needed to find a replacement for her position because her husband just got a promotion and new job in another state and they needed to move quickly. I rushed over to Sarah to share with her what I heard and she was gobsmacked and a little nervous at the idea of talking to this manager about the position. We walked over together and I told the manager that I couldn’t help overhearing her news about moving, and Sarah told her she would like to apply for this position again. This store manager was now also astonished at how quickly everything was happening. It turns out that Sarah got the job that same day, the manager was able to move quickly without worrying about how to find a replacement, and I was delighted that everyone was so happy.

Okay, I know what you are thinking. Did simply organizing the unwrinkled bills (showing great respect to the money) in the new wallet get Sarah the new job? We won’t really ever know for sure, but I’ve seen things like this happen too many times to refute it as just a coincidence. You must always respect your money and how you carry it in your wallet, and it will respect you by growing and multiplying.

It’s also a great lesson to learn about timing and how we are always at the right place at the right time. If we arrived only a couple minutes later at the gift shop, I would not have heard the manager on the telephone talking about needing to find someone to replace her quickly. Trust more and live with faith. Know that everything is working together for your highest good.

And yes, I now get to visit Sarah more often during her breaks from the gift shop at our favorite restaurant in Brentwood. She never lets me pay for lunch anymore when we meet at the restaurant next to the gift shop which, by the way, is now doing better than ever before since Sarah has been at the helm.

Excerpt #2 from Chapter 7:

Meditating Through the Ages & World

About 20 years ago, I was leaving LAX on a flight to another big city to give talks at three different Christian churches, a Fortune 500 company, and two women's groups. It just so happened that I was carrying with me a magazine in which there was an interview I had given and which featured me on the cover. I was reading the interview I had given for the first time when a seemingly kind and pleasant gentleman sat down next to me and introduced himself. When he glanced over at the magazine I was reading, he seemed delighted to see that I was the subject of the interview and exclaimed, “How lucky I am to be sitting next to a celebrity.” I explained that I was not a celebrity but told him that I was just reading the interview I had provided three months prior in a three-hour sit down and photo shoot. When he asked if he could read it after I finished, I agreed since I was quite proud of the comprehensive and positive content of the interview. One of the questions the interviewer had asked of me was about how I stayed connected and engaged when life got stressful. I discussed the importance of sleep and exercise as well as meditation. Specifically I said, “It’s a simple, cost-free and effective way to quiet my mind by closing my eyes and breathing slowly and deeply. Focusing on my breath is an easy way to shut out the chaos of the world for a few moments of joyful quiet stillness. And for me, I turn within to connect with the peace and love of God that is a guiding light in my life.” Then I mentioned a couple more things about how meditation has helped me stay strong, collected, and peaceful over the decades and how I had taught workshops worldwide on this subject and even made house calls to teach families and individuals, as well as businesses and corporations, how to meditate.

When my fellow passenger finished reading, he suddenly called to the flight attendant to ask for a new seat. I was astonished, to say the least, but kept very quiet. When the flight attendant asked him what the issue was, he replied in a very loud voice, “The issue is that this lady sitting next to me is evil and related to the devil because she meditates and it’s against my religion to associate with or talk to any crazy person who practices devil worship.” Well, needless to say, I was dumbfounded. As a health practitioner, writer and speaker, my focus has never been anything but promoting well-being and positivity; his words were ones I’d never heard ascribed to me and certainly never anticipated ever hearing. If the gentleman had remained next to me, I would have taken the opportunity to explain to him that meditation is scientifically proven to alleviate the symptoms of many physical and mental issues and even to slow down the aging process. We could have also discussed the fact that meditation has not historically been at odds with Christianity, and in fact, there are specific philosophies about and ways to practice Christian meditation. But unfortunately, he had been indoctrinated to believe that meditation is a heretical act.

But that's not the end of the story. After he moved his seat, most of the people sitting around me, including three of the flight attendants, who heard his clamorous judgments of me took turns sitting in his empty seat to ask me their personal questions about meditation. Each person wanted my guidance on how they could meditate and how they could teach it to their loved ones, children, places of work, and more. It was very gratifying. Fortunately, it was a long flight to NYC, so I had time to speak with many other passengers about meditation, living peacefully, and creating high-level wellness.

Although this occurred 20 years ago, the experience has stayed with me and is one I often recall with some sadness because I believe that this man, as well as many others, are really missing out on a transformative experience. And one that really could have offered him a way to enrich his faith. So I’ve finally decided that, although it’s overdue, it’s time to offer some insight about the relationship between meditation and the world’s most practiced religions, it’s ancient history as well as its many benefits.

So without further ado...

A History of Meditation

Before I go into the history of meditation, perhaps you may be keen on knowing when I first learned about it and started practicing meditation. When I was a teenager, my grandmother, Fritzie, caught me about the importance of meditation and how to meditate simply and easily and incorporate it into my lifestyle. She taught me that the word "yoga" means "union" and that it refers to a union with God and a union of the body, mind, and spirit. Learning the importance of breathing deeply, especially when life gets overwhelming and filled with stress, was another one of her many teachings in my life for which I am so grateful. (To learn more about my life-changing and life-enriching relationship with my grandmother and also how she taught me about kitchen gardening — how to grow culinary herbs and sprouts like alfalfa, broccoli, lentil, garbanzo, etc. — please refer to my book Kitchen Gardening: Rejuvenate with Homegrown Sprouts.)

My loving grandmother also taught me how to do Prayer-Walking and Prayer-Hiking, another superb and unique way to meditate (in fact, one of my favorites), which I still do to this day out in nature a few times each month. I devoted a detailed chapter to this natural form of meditation in my full-color book Invest in Yourself with Exercise with everything you'll need to know to incorporate this practice into your lifestyle.

We hear a lot about meditation these days. Despite the fact that it’s been around for thousands of years, it’s not been practiced widely in the western world except for in small religious and New Age pockets. But as modern life continues to speed up, commanding more commitments while offering less time for self, meditation has become a popular palliative to relieve stress. The resurgence of yoga in the 90’s is likely the way more Americans began to become familiar with meditation, which is fundamentally a moving meditation. But lately, meditation is commonly being practiced independently of yoga. In fact, it is quite ubiquitous in America today, and in any metropolitan city you can find a handful of meditation studios as well as meetup and other community groups offering meditation classes and sessions. And we may laugh at the irony, but there are literally hundreds of phone apps devoted just to meditation. As meditation begins to become more acceptable, even to many Christians who once condemned it as “evil,” and begins to be adopted by corporate America and even the government (who offer quiet rooms for meditation) and in schools, it’s pretty clear that meditation is not a fad that’s going away anytime soon.

So as it becomes more a part of everyday life, people have begun to wonder about its origins and how it has evolved over the years. You might be surprised to learn that it’s thought that hunter-gatherers even practiced some form of meditation. The earliest recordings of meditation are not even written but in hieroglyph form. Earlier meditators who were non-verbal may have been practicing a form of meditation as they slipped into an altered consciousness through staring at the fire. But theorists believe this iteration of our ancestors had no need for meditation in the way we employ it now or even the way we did 5000 years ago because essentially, meditation is an exercise in quieting the noise of the mind — which we wouldn’t have if we didn’t have that pesky thing called language.

So how does a practice which was discovered/invented by primitive humans still appeal to modern humans who don’t recognize much of themselves in these early ancestors. In a world filled with VR, CGI and AI (virtual reality, computer generated images, artificial intelligence), we’ve obviously evolved right? Well, our technology may have, but we are still unchanged in most aspects. And ironically, all that technology is compelling a need to return to simplicity and for mental calm. Lions trying to kill you may not be the stressor triggering that need anymore, but there is still a need. Meditation has evolved over the years to fit the varying needs of the societies and eras it’s been practiced in. And it’s a fascinating evolution. Let's explore it now.
