Greetings to you and your loved ones. I am delighted to have an opportunity to spend this time with you through my newsletter.
This photo of me to the right was taken not long ago when I hosted a one-day retreat and party at a hotel in Santa Monica for many friends, clients, and members of my Elite Eagles who all participated in the 30-day "reinvigorate your life" program detailed in my latest book WALKING ON AIR: Your 30-Day Inside and Out Rejuvenation Makeover. This book shows you how to make simple, yet effective, choices with your food, home, relationships, finances, lifestyle, and your state of mind. Each step (day) builds on the next and attention is given to the whole person — body, mind, soul, and environment. In addition to the 30-day, life-changing plan, everyone also followed the guidance in my book THE JOY FACTOR: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health and enjoyed the recipes in my full color cookbook RECIPES FOR HEALTH BLISS. During the day, I gave an upbeat and motivating talk on the principles shared in these books on creating your best life; participants shared the healing benefits of their 30-day process; and we all celebrated our success and vibrancy. I taught the program described in Walking on Air at UCLA for 30 years until I retired to teach this life-enriching course worldwide, and to have more time to travel to give workshops, retreats, keynote addresses, and consult/work with clients. I participate in my 30-day program monthly — to start fresh the first of the month, as do most of my friends, to help keep us on track. As we begin this second half of the year with the month of July, it's a great time to recommit to your health program, plant the seeds for what you want to create this month and for the next six months, and to make better choices that support your self-esteem and celebrate life and your friends and loved ones. I learned from my mom and grandmother to look at the months of July and August differently than most people. To me, July 1st is similar to January 1st; it represents a fresh start, a new beginning, and a time to upgrade my life in every way possible for the second half of the year. I always continue this into August, too. So let's all make the most of these glorious two months of sunshine and unlimited possibilities with lots of laughter. And make a conscious choice to be kind to one another and find opportunities to serve and to love one another. Everyone has difficulties and stress-filled lives. So go out of your way this month to go the extra mile and to be an angel to others. What you give out always comes back to you multiplied. As I wrote in the previous newsletter, give someone a flower for no reason at all, even if it's anonymously. This is something so simple, yet can brighten a day. If hamsters can do it (see the photo below to the right), so can we.
July is named for the Roman leader Julius Caesar (100-44 BC). Originally the fifth month of the Roman calendar, this month was first named Quintilus. It was after Caesar's assassination that the month of July was renamed after him because he was born on July 13th. And it was in 42 BC that the Romans recognized Caesar as a god. The Roman Senate decided that Julius's grandnephew Augustus should have a month named for him after he defeated Marc Antony and Cleopatra. Initially a 30-day month, August was lengthened to 31 to prevent anyone from claiming that Emperor Augustus was saddled with an inferior month.
What can we all do to celebrate July and August and make them the juiciest months ever? Consider the following: I'd like to pass along to you this new way of looking at these months. Why don't you do what I always do? I write down my goals for the eight weeks, alongside what I want to accomplish or achieve by December 31st. Whatever goals are important to you, write them down. Your dreams, wishes, and goals become more tangible and solidified when you write them down.
Also, I want to encourage you to take an hour or two, as soon as possible, and on one page write down your highest vision for how you want your life to be. But, here's the catch — you must write it as though it were now your current reality — in the present tense. For example, you may choose to write something like this to start off:I am now living my life on my own terms. I am healthy, happy, and peaceful and am filled with joy and thanksgiving. My body is in the best shape ever and I always have energy to spare.Continue for one page and cover all aspects of your life such as your health, fitness level, prosperity, relationships, work or career, and so on. Keep it to one page. At the end, write "thank you" three times. Then, keep this one page on your bedside table or in your purse, or pocket, or both. Read it once a day throughout July and August. I will be doing the same thing with you — my new extended family. From time to time, I will refine and update this page if I think of more things that I want to add to it. Now, here's the most important thing: every time you read it, you must feel that this is your present reality. Feel those heartfelt feelings of joy and gratitude for these dreams-come-true.
It was Henry David Thoreau, in all his sagacity, who wrote this beautiful passage: "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost. There is where they should be. Now put foundations under them."I love that! You are the architect, master, and CEO of your body, your health, and your life. If you knew that you couldn't fail at achieving your highest vision for yourself, what would this look like? This is exactly what you want to write down. As within, so without.
You change your life by first changing what you think and how you feel, and this letter to yourself is an excellent start. Next, you must bolster this positive one-page vision description with positive affirmations. Finally, in case you're one of the few who haven't seen this popular YouTube selection of a little girl saying her affirmations in the mirror, you will enjoy this 50-second video. What she is doing is what my grandmother taught me to do when I was a young girl and I've been riding the same wave of optimism and positivity ever since using daily affirmations. Every day you'll find a new affirmation in the sidebar of this website as well as a new inspirational quote from one of my books.
Speaking of light, I have always been fond of lighthouses and what they symbolize on a metaphysical level. They are designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses or, in older times, from a fire, and used as an aid to navigation for pilots at sea or on inland waterways. I've had the good fortune to visit many lighthouses around the United States. Never am I disappointed with these treasures. Their beauty, magnificence, and architectural design captivate me. If you've never seen one up close and personal, you must put that on your "to do" list.
One time in Oregon, I had a picnic with a friend in a lighthouse. He made the arrangements and I made the lunch. What a joy! We are all much like lighthouses in that we have this beautiful light within us that is never extinguished. It's the light of Love, of God, and the more we connect with this light inside us, the stronger it (and we) become. Our heart-light, as I like to call it, is ever-present and available to us 24/7. It's our safe harbor, and the place of peace and love within us that is always guiding us, just as the beacon of light coming from the lighthouse guides the ships to safety and is the best path for navigation. Make friends with your own personal heart-light and see how much more confident, courageous, successful, and happy you will be — in every area of your life.
July is Blueberry Month and National Outdoor Month — two things that are important to me and I write about both below. This is the month to eat as many berries as you can, and to also get outdoors and enjoy some time in nature. If you live north of the equator, you will be enjoying bright summer days with lots of light and the outdoors beckoning you to come out to play in nature. Below you'll find some information on getting outdoors to exercise to help quell stress and depression. August is National Women's Month. Celebrate your relationships with all of your female friends, family members, and co-workers this month.
