For centuries, in ancient medical traditions the world over, healing practitioners have known the importance of detoxification -- drawing out, neutralizing, and eliminating accumulated toxins -- for maintaining optimum health. In Ayurvedic practice in India, for example, the definition of health is a state in which the body is free of toxins, organs are functioning optimally, and waste is eliminated efficiently. Similarly, in Chinese medicine, the body's ability to detoxify -- to expunge both toxic wastes and negative emotions -- is considered the root of both physical and mental wellbeing. Teas, tonics, and other treatments are among the natural remedies in Chinese practitioners' arsenals used to rid the body of byproducts that accumulate simply from the normal, everyday activities of eating, breathing, and exercising. Native Americans and other indigenous cultures have long used fasting and sweat lodges to purify the body in a comparable way.

Today, we have even more of a need for detoxification than the ancients. Every minute, our body's cells produce the energy needed to sustain life and, in the process, produce wastes that must be eliminated such as carbon dioxide, uric acid, and free radicals. Under ideal conditions, our body's expertly designed detox system expels these toxins through the lungs, skin, urine, and intestines. But in modern life, we've come to overtax our systems a great deal. Due to the stresses of our fast-paced society, we are often sleep deprived, fraught with anxiety, and overfull of nutritionally devoid fast foods, so our bodies are unable to perform the deeper level of detox that is necessary to avert the accumulation of ordinary toxins. Add to this the toxins that we've introduced to our world within the past fifty years -- including synthetic chemicals, air and water pollutants, heavy metals, prescription drugs, and transfats -- and it's clear that we're piling on much more than our natural detoxification systems were designed to handle.

Allopathic (Western) medicine is beginning to turn its attention to the ways in which this "detox debt" is contributing to widespread ailments such as headaches, bowel irregularities, allergies, and depression, as well as the epidemic levels of "diseases of civilization" such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Modern practitioners have begun to investigate the efficacy of ancient healing practices to bolster the body's detox mechanisms. While many detoxification programs are still viewed skeptically because of the potential health risks they pose (such as intensive juicing and fasting "fad" cleansing programs), there is a growing consensus that when used properly, herbs and nutritionally rich foods can help coax the body into a deeper level of detox than its normal baseline and thereby quell many conditions associated with toxicity.
