The Health Benefits of Turmeric and Curcumin

What gives ballpark mustard its bright color and Indian curry its exotic flavor? Turmeric, the deeply hued orange-yellow spice, has long been revered in Southern Asia for its saturation of color (used to dye textiles), its characteristic taste, and its plethora of health benefits.

Today, the root is a hot topic among scientists. Turmeric's active compound, providing many of the health benefits of turmeric, is curcumin, which has proven to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, offering relief for those suffering from conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Regular curcumin consumption may reduce bowel symptoms and the need for medications in patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It can also lessen swelling and stiffness in arthritis sufferers. In India, diseases such as prostate and colon cancers and Alzheimer's are extremely rare, possibly due to a diet rich in turmeric.

Curcumin: Health Benefits

Curcumin, in combination with quercetin (an antioxidant found in onions) has been shown to reduce the size and number of precancerous intestinal lesions in those with colon polyps; curcumin combined with a phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower led to reduced tumor growth in prostate cancer sufferers. Curmumin may also arrest the progression of breast cancer and leukemia cells. The root boosts the liver's capacity to detoxify the body of dietary carcinogens.

Preliminary research in lab mice suggests that turmeric consumption may slow the progression of Alzheimer's.

Turmeric's antioxidant properties may also account for its ability to prevent oxidation of cholesterol in the bloodstream and reduce total cholesterol.

Curcumin has also been shown to protect the eyes from free radicals, which are one of the leading causes of cataracts.

Though curcumin is available in supplement forms, as mentioned below, you can also sprinkle some turmeric spice on any of your foods such as a dish of onions and cauliflower, into a lentil curry, mixed in a tofu-vegetable sauté, or added to soups and sauces.
